chrisban35
Everyone makes a big deal about being under 6 foot these days... Two fundamentals to consider, and what I was taught while in football. One, ALL players have to bring the ball down into their chest area. While some attempt to move on the ball, shorter people attempt to move on the arms and the process of bringing it down. Stats show that its MORE effective to concentrate on the catch AFTER contact than before. Half of today's running back that break out of the backfield make large gains due to their quick ability to cut. Everyone knows, the shorter to the ground, statistically the more likely to cut better. Safeties don't have to be lumberjacks, they have to be nimble, fast, and VERY INTUITIVE of the play action. Last, when I played safety I weighed in at a whopping 185lbs.. But when you gave me, at a minimum, 3 steps or more before collision, that player I hit didn't know the difference between me or someone 6' 235lbs. I assure you!!! I'll take someone 5'10" over 6' any day for secondary position... Even in the pros, where guys are making mistakes these days, is when their "heads" get too big and they think they can tackle someone by simply hitting them! Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals... Follow them and a few pounds and inches means nothing!
