s0crates
From the CBSSports link, above: "Size limitations make him strictly a 4-3 candidate. ". Hope they're wrong. There is a place for smaller LBs in the 3-4 I think, they just need to be able to play inside. Of course there is also the possibility he was drafted to be a wrecking ball covering kicks. He seems to have the right skill set for that. EDIT: The WaPo piece above says he played kick coverage. My bet is they saw something they liked in that aspect of his game. Normally you wouldn't put as much emphasis on special teams as we seem to be this year (looks like most of our picks played teams well in college), but our special teams is abnormally bad. Larry
Yeah, I get the feeling that part of our strategy is to pick people who contribute on ST, while we see if we can turn them into something more.
Going Commando
He's short, but not small. Just watch the shirtless heavy rope training at the end of his highlight video if you need convincing. No homo. Welcome Set-em-Straight Spaight!!! This is now my favorite nickname.
gohogs14
I think you guys are really going to like Spaight. Flew under the radar after only 1 year of production coming from junior college, but will outwork anyone and plays with some fire. Not easy to lead the SEC in tackles. And yes, he did light some people up on kickoff returns. We called it getting #Spaighted https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwxycLmfiCU&feature=youtu.be
AlvinWaltonIsMyBoy
Where is AlvinWaltonIsMyBoy? I know he's going to like this pick You're right, I love this pick. These are the kinda guys you win football games with. This dude is a pure animal. I still think this is the guy that SM referred to as a steal in November. Other people argue that it was Stephone Anthony. I just don't see how a kid that was one of the most highly recruited LBs out of high school, played at Clemson with a lot of hype, could be considered a diamond in the rough. I don't think Anthony snuck up on anybody.
Going Commando
Here he is breaking down some film on the LSU win: https://youtu.be/Mrwe2W_cVHw?t=20m20s Bielema said Spaight was his best player this season. He's an instinctive, disciplined linebacker. Very explosive, always seems to do a good job breaking down and wrapping up. Regularly impedes forward progress on contact. He's got strong hands and keeps his pads low so he does win leverage battles more than you'd expect for such a short linebacker.
Going Commando
Some of those plays where he gets down and hides behind his linemen so that ball carriers can't see him and they run into his gap are London Fletcher-esque. You also see plays where linemen who are pulling or running screens just don't see him and thus don't block him. London used to be really good at avoiding blocks like that. Spaight doesn't let his size hinder him, rather, he uses it to make some plays against well blocked plays. Also impressed with some of the tackles that he made off his frame. He's a gifted tackler. elkabong82
One of my favorite picks of this draft. He and Keenan as ILBs are going to be a nasty duo. Spaight's weakness is range, but that only really gets exposed if he's on the outside. ILB spot suits his strengths, which are playing in close quarters, tracking the RB and taking good angles to the ball carrier, and tackling. Hit the gym and add a little more weight and we've got a potential Fletcher clone. Add on top of that he is a competitor that truly loves being out there. Very dedicated to his craft. I wouldn't at all be surprised if this kid pushes Riley out some time during the season and relegates him to 3rd down pass coverage.

Conn
Paging Koolblue13. Koolblue13 to the white courtesy phone. Riley's replacement? In the 5th? More like a possible ST gunner. Still feel this way? Seems this guy is getting some real praise in here.

EXCELLENT football player. All of these players go full guns on the field. All of them. This kid plays with passion and has REALLY good technique. Maybe his size knocked him down? I really like him. Language is NSFW on the music... but this video is excellent. Hard worker on the field and off (as you see at the end). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwxycLmfiCU
shakinaiken
Seems like a decent prospect, but damn, he ran a slower 40 time than our LT. Not sure if that signifies Trent's just a freak athlete, or Spaight's not a particular good athlete.

Fletcher was only 5'10". Brady was nobody. Some things you can't measure. I have no more idea than the next guy, but you can't write a guy off because of a bad 40 time. He looks pretty good in the game action I've seen.

TSO
Here he is breaking down some film on the LSU win: https://youtu.be/Mrwe2W_cVHw?t=20m20s Nice find, steve... everyone should do themselves a favor and go to about 23:45 in that video. Really insightful and impressive in the way he identified how the back was reading him and took advantage of that to cause a fumble later in the game. Est.1974
Special teams standout in the making looking at those highlights. I pref this approach than ones of previous years, where we are out there signing backup LBs in FA to simply bolster our special teams.
RedskinsInFebruary
Ha, watching Spaight's video is like watching London Fletcher play. Very efficient, straight line to ball carrier, at which point the ball carrier's progress stops. Seems like he's always a second ahead of everyone else in knowing what's happening. Just like Fletch did....
Bobby Peppers
This would most likely be the guy Scot was referring to in the ESPN article if we indeed were able to draft that player.

Yup, Keneen Robinson ran a slow 40 also. I think it was a 4.8X 40. But his game speed is a lot faster then that.

I wasn't writing him off which is why I started my response by highlighting the point that he seems like a decent prospect. I was just amused by his 40 time.
