Redskins Announce Re-Signing Of Kai Forbath

Recommended Posts

Probably not the flashiest signing of the offseason but I'll venture to say 1 of the most important one's. You just can't put a price on his production, not to mention his value to the team. I'll even go a step further & say he's the best kicker we've had since M. Mosely. He's the only bright spot on our STs unit. I just hope Gruden doesn't do something stupid like he did last year & bring someone in for "competition". Welcome back Kai.

Sorry Canada, I have to disagree. He makes his kicks from the 39 in. That's great. But we were one of the last place teams in terms of opponent starting field position because of his poor KOs. He only had 18 TBs out of 54 KOs for a 33.3%. That is one of the worst in the NFL. We need a complete kicker, not 1/2 a kicker.

Also, the average attempts from 50 yrs and out for NFL kickers (with at least 20 FGAs) last year was 5, with some as high as 10. Kai tried 1. For his career he is 2-4. That's only 4 tries in 3 years! At 50% you think they would try him more. It would seem like they have no confidence in him for long kicks.

I guess if you had to choose you would prefer your kicker to have a better touch back % than FG %, OK, that's fine by me. To each their own. But personally I would rather have my kicker score points. Like him or not he does that very well. Oh...& BTW...he hit on 88% form the 40-49 last year. Just so you know.

It's not his fault that he hasn't attempted more 50 yarders. You can speculate all you want that the coaching staff has "no confidence in him for long kicks" but unless you're part of the coaching staff you, or anyone else, doesn't know. All anyone knows for sure is that he hits on 88% of his FGs. I'll take that any day of the week. It's up to the other 10 guys on the field to make the tackles.

Every time I bring this up people immediately jump to you must value TBs over FGs. Let me be clear, I never said anything close to that. Of course FGs are more important. But my bigger point, and my only point here, is he is not a complete kicker, not even close. If we can get someone who is good at both, would that not be a better situation?

Opponents starting field position was on average almost 4 yds better than league average (28 vs 24). That may not seem like much, but each yard statistically significantly improves the other teams chances of scoring. That's not all on Kai. KO coverage could certainly be better. But he had only 18 TBs in 54 tries last yr. Also, and this should interest you, each yr he gets injured for some period of time so he is not available for FGs. He strains his leg trying to kick harder.

Yes, he pretty solid at FGs, which is great, and which is the more important of the two. But good KOs can help the Def. ALso, generally 50+ yd FG atts. are to win gms. Not sure we had that many chances, and in general his chances or lack there of are not his fault. But clearly the coaches have no confidence in him outside the 39. This is a handicap.

BTW: If you back out 50+yd FGs, 88% from the 39 in would get you tied for 19th in the league, not exactly great.

If he even just got his TBs up to 50%, that would be great. It would help the D a lot. Maybe that happens this year. I certainly hope so. If the worse thing that happens is we do exactly like last yr and mix Way in a KOs having Kai do Ex Pts and FGs less than 50yds,  that's not the end of the world by any means.

But in the meantime, wouldn't some competition be good for him? Us? If we can improve the position, shouldn't we do so?
