Zguy28
Anglo-Saxon Eye Remedy Kills Deadly Superbug http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/offbeat/anglo-saxon-eye-remedy-kills-deadly-superbug/ar-AAafOS7?ocid=ansibt11 A 1,000-year-old Anglo-Saxon remedy for eye infections has been found to be effective against antibiotic-resistant superbugs, researchers from the University of Nottingham said on Monday. The scientists recreated a 9th Century remedy to treat styes. The age-old remedy called for "cropleek and garlic, of both equal quantities, pound them well together … take wine and bullocks gall, mix with the leek … let it stand nine days in the brass vessel," according to the New Scientist. Some of the ingredients, such as copper from the brass vessel, have antimicrobial properties, but the scientists were not sure if the recipe would be effective against infection. They tested it on tissue samples from mice infected with the MRSA superbug, an antibiotic-resistant strain of Staph, which the U.S. National Institute of Health says has “evolved from a controllable nuisance into a serious public health concern.” Rest at link

The 12th Commandment
Thinking about it, except the gall, I often have those ingredients brewing in my stomach after a nice meal. Never had the MRSA neither.
Destino
I read this on cnn this morning too. Didn't seem like anyone expected that stuff to work and really I doubt anyone would. Now they're going to have to go into that old book and try the other arcane concoctions. I wonder which scientist will show up for work dressed as a 9th century Anglo Saxon. The Sisko
Thinking about it, except the gall, I often have those ingredients brewing in my stomach after a nice meal. Never had the MRSA neither. I don't know whether to be impressed or scared that you can down a brass vessel.
The 12th Commandment
I don't know whether to be impressed or scared that you can down a brass vessel. Technicality. I never figured a highly reactive cast iron stomach to be much good, brass is better for body parts. And witchly undergarments.
