ESPN radio suddenly halts ‘The Man Cave’, and some blame NFL’s Redskins

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/whats-behind-move-to-pull-plug-on-the-man-cave/2015/03/16/49692a50-cc20-11e4-a2a7-9517a3a70506_story.html

Sports columnist Jason Reid said goodbye to his Washington Post colleagues on Wednesday and headed off to his next job: hosting a morning radio program on Washington’s ESPN 980 (WTEM AM).

But he never got there.

Late last week, station managers told the would-be radio host that his new program, “The Man Cave,” wasn’t airing as scheduled Monday despite several weeks of promotional buildup. It’s not clear whether it will ever air, at least with Reid running the show. What’s more, the station executive who conceived the Reid-hosted program, Chuck Sapienza, resigned from the station Monday, apparently over the show’s demise.

Sucks he lost his gig, but I was not happy about losing Mike and Mike. Twitter feedback does work! ;)

I assume this is why Cooley opened his Monday show with: "I really love the Redskins.  I love working here at this job.  What a great org."  Paraphrased, but essentially that.

I guess Allen didn't like being called to the carpet on NYE?

Cooley wasn't on the show monday.

What are you talking about?

This is why you don't start monologuing and ranting like a grandstanding fan during a press conference, instead of asking questions like a professional member of the media. Did Allen do a good job last year? No. That doesn't mean Reid had a license to disrespect him by taking over the press conference and cutting him off when he didn't like Allen's answer.

You guys realize Kevin Sheehan has called Allen an idiot multiple times right?

He's accused the owner of siding with Griffin and firing Shanahan, who according to Sheehan was the best football guy to be in the org since Marty, and put Allen in place who did a terrible job. Saying that Snyder put his relationship with Griffin ahead of running a quality organization. That Allen is not fit for the GM role. Among other things.

Sheehan still has a job. Is still ranting against the owner and quarterback (he stopped ranting against Allen once he hired McCloughan) on an almost daily basis.

But don't let that get in the way of your "Snyder wont let anyone on 980 talk critically about him or the team" arguments.

Yeah, maybe, although I thought that's what reporters did?  :)  Either way, can't believe you would quit your job to go work for someone you wrote scathing (albeit true a lot of times) articles about and not expect some kind of repercussions.

His efforts (negative articles) might have helped skins fans out by pushing the org to hire a true-blue GM.

I think there is some artistic freedom, but also don't think they feel they can say what they would always like to say.  We also don't know any "counseling" that went on behind the scenes.

As I said in the other thread...there is constructive criticism, and then there is the agenda based criticism that Reid pushes 24/7.  He's a complete tool and hack.  Someone linked an ESPN article he wrote the other day, and he's the ONLY person who can somehow make Jameis Winston look like a sympathetic figure.  The comments section from his article absolutely roasted Reid, so it's not just us in DC who see him as an awful journalist.

I'm not huge fans of people like Skip Bayless, Thom Lovarro, Czabe, Chad Dukes, The Junkies (at times), SAS, or even Diana Russini...but the one thing I'll NEVER say is that I could do their jobs better than they could.  Reid, on the other hand, I'm sure I could.

I usually dont support the management with stuff like this, and for anyone else I would be railing against them

But Jason Reid sucks. He a terrible writer, he hates this franchise. How you gonna be overly critical of a team and then expect a job from them.

That and the John Wall article make me go "Bye Felicia," to that clown.

A few things on this.

If they were trying to get rid of haters. Loverro would have been gone a year ago. He's whining voice just has ruined the whole noon slot.

I think while the idea of the show itself was awful. They should have put it on for a few months and then just canceled it and sited feedback/ratings (if those were low).

I don't think Snyder or Allen were the guys to do this as much as I suspect a former radio VP in Larry Michael. But I suspect him of everything awful with their outward facing operation.

I think the city has been done with Reid since the J Wall Tattoo nonsense. He's not just a Skins hater. I think he's kind of angry.

What are you talking about? Who said this?

everyone at 106.7, the washington post, and plenty of people that post on ES.

there's a discussion about this going on in the I hate lavar and chad thread. it goes on multiple places.

people refer to 980 as filtered, they say people can't say things they want to, they just make up things that the hosts say, it's actually quite ridiculous. the show is on free airwaves, anyone can listen to it. it's streamed through espn980.com for free, including mobile devices. every segment is uploaded to the audio vault, also free. it's incredible what people say, it's quite clear they never listen despite it being free and easy to listen to.

i don't know why i bother defending them, the people that feel this way aren't interested in the truth they're interested in a specific narrative.

you base this on what? i've heard plenty of rants from Sheehan, Lovero, Czabe, Mitchel, Doc Walker, and Al Galdi.

In fact, Cooley is the only current host I haven't really heard anything super negative from - that's because he cares about his relationships with the players, coaches, allen, and snyder too much to go overboard.

they've gone on plenty of rants. just because they don't make up bull**** about snyder and allen doesn't mean they are censored/filtered/etc. there's plenty of factual reasons to rip snyder and allen, there really isn't a need to make things up.

this is all based on the fact that years ago snyder fired riggens and mitchell for being overly critical, and removed the washington post's tickets for being critical, and the way snyder handled the redskins game broadcast rights with WJFK. not only has he not fired his current lineup of hosts, who have all been plenty negative including specifically calling out snyder, but he's hired back mitchell.

it's like 10+ year old bull**** drama between the redskins and the washington post, and the redskins and WJFK. it's all be documented. quit buying into the nonesense.

Yesterday on Dukes he did reference the team owned message board. I just laughed.

because the people that listen to 106.7 the fan know no different. they get away with saying whatever they want.

it is what it is. the ****ty thing is the washington post's ability to get away with it, because they actually have significant influence over people. from my experience whatever narrative the washington post is running with on any given issue is the overwhelming view of the general public in the area. there's no one to ever challenge it.

Understood. I thought you were referring to posts made in this thread. Thanks for clarifying.

People who want to defend Reid, need to read this article and just count how many times he passes his opinion off as fact: http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12466946/washington-redskins-interest-drafting-quarterback-marcus-mariota-genuine

In addition to that, it's just a horribly written article. It lacks focus, theme, it's just a scatter shot of Reid's thoughts and opinions. Plus, I just love this line:

People I trust say new Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan is great at his job.

No. ****ing. ****. Genius. He has an incredible and well-documented reputation; people you trust? How about just about every reporter out there thinks he's a great hire?

i don't like his writing, but, criticizing a team that rightfully deserves criticism is the duty of a beat writer.

He just goes too far.

And he went way too far during Allen's presser, so far that even though Allen ducked and dodged and chuckled his way through all of the questions, what i ultimately took away from that whole fiasco was how utterly unprofessional and personally embarrassing Reid was. Regardless of his personal fan feelings, standing there lecturing Allen was extremely bad form in the wrong setting.

If people want to think that means 980 clamps down on what the jocks say, i don't buy it, because I hear them criticize the team every single day, and not in a nice way, and sometimes off on totally unwarranted speculation.

But that's their job, and it would have been Reid's job if he had any sense of the difference between what they do and what he did.

They didn't fire him because they want to clamp the mouths of critics shut.

They fired him because Allen rightfully took it personally, and waited until he had quit his job and expected to start his new one before showing him why you not only don't burn your bridges behind you, but you sure as **** don't nuke the ones in front of you either.

It's a shame Sapienza didn't anticipate that his boss might not like it.

I don't know if someone in the Redskins demanded the show be cancelled. However, Reid preemptively burned his bridge to working for anything Redskins. Normally you hear about burning bridges when you leave, but Reid managed to burn his bridge to get there. Professionalism is non existent to many in the media, as it's more important to get your name out there, than it is to get facts correct. If he treated the organization and other media members with respect (wasn't he the one who got into a physical confrontation last year), people might actually want to listen to him.
