The NFL will investigate the possibility that the New England Patriots deflated footballs during the AFC championship game, which they won 45-7 over the Indianapolis Colts, according to Bob Kravitz of WTHR.com.

It rained constantly on Sunday in Foxborough, Mass., which made gripping the ball challenging. Obviously, a less-inflated ball is easier to grip than a fully inflated one.

I'm confused, wouldn't this have benefited the colts too?

Whether it would have befitted the Colts or not, you still can't just choose to do something outside the rules.

And then it would raise the question of whether they gave the Colts the same deflated balls, or whether the Pats actually practiced with the deflated ones to get use to them. If there was intent to cheat, I would think it was probably one of those scenarios.

I think the cheatriots practiced with these deflated balls. It would be interesting to know the opinion of a QB about it, and also trying to quantify how much of an advantage you get.

How much a deflated ball can change the grip, and therefore influence/impact the hand and arm motions during the throw ? How much it can affect the kick ?

Are you kidding me? The REFS handle the balls not the patriots. If the Colts really though that, they could have checked the balls or let the REFS check. Lose by 38 and come up with excuses. Got you asre kicked is what happened.

Did the Colts complain about this? From the article I read, it almost seemed like the referees took it upon themselves to remove a ball from the game to be weighed by the league.

I'll withhold judgement until the results of the weigh-in are published.

This is truly asinine.  Each team provides balls, but the officials are 100% in charge of them.  They move them in and out of the game at their discretion.  If the Patriots DID provide deflated balls, they had no control over when the balls would be used, therefore they would very possibly be givng the Colts an advantage of a deflated ball just as much or even possibly more than their own team.  It is just the in thing to try to accuse the Pats of cheating no matter what, because everyone hates on winners unless they are on their own team.

The ball boys are employees of the home team.  The refs are in control of calling for new balls, but the ballboy can decide which one to toss them.  Seems like a lot of trouble to go to for not much gain though.

If it is found that the Pats were cheating they need to forfeit the game (if it can't be proved early enough they would be stripped of whatever they won - if they Win the Bowl that trophy is stripped) additionally all their draft picks for the next two years should be stripped and given to the Redskins - (The latter is obviously the most logical thing to do  and note only suspicion should needed to be enough for the draft pick penalty to go into effect).

I mean, on the face of it, this is not that big of a deal given how badly the Patriots beat the Colts with the run game.  However, when you combine that with Spygate, it paints a very troubling picture of how the Patriots conduct business.  If this were the first time we had heard anything about the Patriots trying to gain an advantage through breaking rules, then I think this would be a non-story.  But it's clear that they think they are above the rules and regulations of the league and won't get caught - or, worse yet, no one will care.
