Slateman
http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-30710883?ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbc_breaking&ns_source=twitter&ns_linkname=news_central Gunmen have attacked the Paris office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo, killing 12 people and injuring seven in an apparent Islamist attack. At least two masked attackers opened fire with assault rifles in the office and exchanged shots with police in the street outside before escaping by car. The gunmen shouted "we have avenged the Prophet Muhammad", witnesses say. President Francois Hollande said there was no doubt it had been a terrorist attack "of exceptional barbarity". A major police operation is under way in the Paris area to catch the killers. For those who don't know, Charlie Hebdo has a reputation of mocking everyone, including Islam. They recently published a satirical picture of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. 12 killed, including two police officer who were responding. Attackers had AKs and RPGs. There are videos out there of the actual attack, but I figured you can find them on your own if you really want to.

TheGoodBits
The first video on the BBC link is frustrating. If that were in the US rather than France, someone in one of those apartments would have likely owned a firearm and been able to at least take out one of them. Instead a cop got gunned down and the terrorists got away.

Corcaigh
I don't understand what you mean. The terrorists had AK-47s. They "exchanged shots with police in the street outside". But you think if this was America a citizen with a handgun would have taken care of business?

The guys were like 30-40 yards max right below the guy taking the video. Any halfway competent shot with a hunting rifle and a set of balls would have been able to kill one of them rather than watch the lone police officer with a handgun get murdered right in front of their face. It's beyond insulting/insensitive, and I'm a US citizen. Did you watch the video taken on a cell phone on a balcony? The guys were like 30-40 yards max right below the guy taking the video. We have far more gun violence in this country than in France. We also have vastly more guns. We basically never hear anything like what you are describing happening here. Its a fantasy. There is zero evidence that the outcome you describe would happen.

You watch too many movies. You're right guys. My bad. These guys probably had invincibility shields up so it would have been impossible to assist the cop being gunned down. Sorry for assuming that someone with a firearm would have been able to make any difference. We have far more gun violence in this country than in France. We also have vastly more guns. We basically never hear anything like what you are describing happening here. Its a fantasy. There is zero evidence that the outcome you describe would happen. I wasn't trying to start a discussion about the prevalence of gun violence in America. Just pointing out that in this very SPECIFIC circumstance, based on that ACTUAL video, SOMEONE in the area owning a hunting rifle absolutely WOULD have been able to make a difference. To say otherwise is downright ignorant.

Destino
They escaped?! They killed 12 people in Paris, got into a gun fight with a few police officers, and no other law enforcement showed up during that time allowing them to just drive off? That's got to be concerning for that city's residents. I hope they catch these guys quickly and I hope they honor the dead by mocking their murderers mercilessly through out the entire process. Let the world know that while these blood thirsty savages can draw blood they will never amount to more than fleas on the ass of western society. TheGoodBits
Just saw it, and I still think your notion is absurd. I'm still not sure how it's absurd to assume a competent gun owner would be unable to shoot someone who is mostly stationary from 40 yards away, but that's fine. Agree to disagree. Wildbunny
the normal cops there don't usually carry guns.....kinda expected result They do, they really do, they're not the regular bobbies in UK. There's some real stupidities done here in France regarding that kind of stuff. They just caught off guard at worst. I'm not gonna go into the debate about weapons or such, not the time, don't feel like it. And since we don't have death penalty here, I just hope we're gonna allow policemen to shoot at sight, and pratice live targets. Other than that, that's quite terrible. And I feel that's just the beginning, those kind of asshole tends to mulitply themselves quite easily.
The Evil Genius
France's murder rate is about 1/4 of the U.S. murder rate. This type of violence is unexpected. Stay vigilant France.

And that's a concern, they're usually pretty dumb and not trained. On another strange note, military guy patrolling airports and trainstation have FAMAS but they aren't loaded and munitions are sealed. Talk about stupidity here, as they wouldn't be able to do anything but dying in case something like this happen in their vincinity.
