Redskins 27 - 24 Eagles

Welcome to the ending of another disastrous season in Washington. After the promise of training camp and the preseason, we are again faced with just three wins in late December. Just one victory will best last year's effort, but to do so the Redskins will have to defeat division rival Philadelphia, whom they play today, or Dallas, scheduled for next week.

My name is JimmiJo, and along with Spaceman Spiff, will peek through our fingers at the match today.

The Redskins have every reason to lose today. They are playing a superior team with a winning record trying to make the playoffs. Philadelphia beat Washington once this year in an exciting match at their stadium. But that was a different Washington squad. Injuries have significantly changed the makeup on Washington's roster and Philadelphia will face different starters at quarterback, cornerback, strong safety, outside linebacker, and probably inside linebacker.

The Redskins also have every reason to win. This team showed against Philadelphia and Dallas they are capable of playing at a high level if they minimize mistakes and execute. Washington has a chance to play spoiler to someone and why not do it on national television?

And what better Christmas present than to give the fans something to smile about?

The final two games will be played against the backdrop of head coach Jay Gruden's future in Washington. I was happy to see the report from Dianna Russini of NBC4 stating Gruden's job was safe. I hope this is true.

I have said publicly Gruden needs better talent. Has he made mistakes? Yes. But if you look at where the biggest problems are, it is not at head coach. If you want to fire a coach I can think of better candidates who's initials happen to be Jim Haslett.

Make no mistake, Haslett suffers from the same lack of talent. But it is five years later and he should get the grace that Gruden deserves.

Rather they hire a proper talent evaluator and rebuild the roster.

Who said there's no Santa Claus?

The Washington Redskins defeated the Philadelphia Eagles 27-24 at FedEx Field on a late Kai Forbath field goal. Forbath's game-winner came moments after Bashaud Breeland intercepted Mark Sanchez on 3rd-and-four at the Eagles' 42 with 1:36 remaining.

The win elevates Washington's season record to four wins, 11 losses. One better than last season's three-win finish. The win also damages Philadelphia's chances at the post season. The Eagles need Dallas to lose Sunday verses the Indianapolis Colts and the following Sunday at FedEx against the Redskins to have a shot at winning the division.

The Washington Redskins didn't do anything exceptionally well in the win. Sure, they had two big pass plays to DeSean Jackson for plus-fifty yards. Morris likewise broke a 28-yard run for score. And Bachaud Breeland had the critical interception that set up the winning field goal.

After these however, you can't find areas where the Redskins dominated the play throughout. They surrendered nearly 500-yards of offense. They allowed Philadelphia to go 56% on third down. They lost time of possession.

But they didn't hurt themselves like normal. The Redskins committed what should have been a game-costing turnover when Andre Roberts fumbled to start the second half. But the ineptness of Eagles kicker Cody Parkey mitigated any damage. The other thing that stood out was a lack of penalties. The Redskins committed just three for 15-yards. The Eagles conversely, were flagged 13-times for 102-yards.

This game showed what possibilities exist when you limit turnovers and penalties.

Robert Griffin III went 16/23 for 220-yards and an interception to finish with a QB-rating of 81.8. Not his best day ever. But he got the win and did some nice things along the way.

The two deep passes to Jackson were huge. He did a good job with his eyes throughout the game. He should excellent poise at times. A deep out to Roberts on third-and-19 was marvelous, unfortunately dropped.

But he was also responsible for the interception. He locked on Jackson, which prompted the safety to slide over up top. Not only did Griffin commit the sin of throwing anyway; he missed Pierre Garcon running in single coverage down the left seam. Other times he held the ball too long and tried to force things late.

But most important is that Griffin showed progress as a pocket-passer. For the first time this year it felt like a complete effort. Not always great, but getting better. This is important because while it has always been clear Griffin is the most gifted athletically; he needed to show development behind center in the pocket.

Following the game I tweeted Griffin probably did enough to earn himself the starter's mantle heading into the offseason and training camp. Gruden was happy with Griffin, praising him for standing tall and making plays.

Other areas worth mentioning were the offensive line and run game.

The line suffered multiple injuries in-game with a swap at center, right guard, and both tackles necessary at one point or another. Yet they managed to surrender only two sacks and rushed for 100 total net yards and three rushing touchdowns. Washington had no chance without such a performance.

Then there was Alfred Morris. Morris posted 83-yards on 21 carries and a touchdown. Darrel Young got into the act, with two runs for two yards. Both for touchdowns.

That's 21-points from the running backs.

But then there was the defense. If Griffin made the argument to open camp as the starter, Jim Haslett's defensive scheme showed why he should be working elsewhere next year. The secondary was constantly playing off the receivers, giving Philadelphia a lot of cushion. The Eagles racked up 361-yards passing as a result. Add another 134 on the ground.

The Philadelphia scoring drive in the second quarter went 93-yards on 15 plays and featured two third down conversions of 3rd-and-25 and 3rd-and-15. Washington had a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter before allowing Philadelphia to tie the game. And the Eagles were driving before Breeland intercepted Mark Sanchez's pass on 3rd-and-four with 1:36 remaining.

Washington did manage three sacks, but were largely ineffective at pressuring Sanchez until late in the game where a blitz caused the poor pass which resulted in the interception.

Given the painful season fans have had to endure, there is little to complain about tonight. After six-straight defeats, Washington needed a win in the worst way. And the win is meaningful. With postseason implications for Philadelphia, the Eagles had everything to play for.

The Redskins rose to the occasion and gave fans a Christmas present they can happily hang on the holiday tree. No need to give Redskins memorabilia anonymously now. This victory damages Eagles' postseason hopes while improving the overall record over last season. Not much to be mad about here.

With Dallas coming to town, it gives fans one final game to look forward to.

A win over the Cowboys would significantly ease the pain of another lost season while giving fans hope for next year.

At the game. Some notes:

-There have to be more Eagles than Redskins fans here. 60-40 I'd guess.

-Eagles got a mix of boos and cheers when entering for warm-ups but more cheers

-Redskins were very loudly booed onto the field, as much as away teams often are.

The NFL Network pregame show just did a  break down of the Redskins, Gruden and Griffin... VERY GOOD!!

They spoke about how Gruden said he doesn't care who the QB of the Wshington Redskins is he just wants to win.

Faulk- " We've seen Eli Manning and Ben Roethlisberger struggle with new offenses what do you think a 3rd year guy is going to do in a new offense? You don't get a 102 passer rating your rookie year and that talent just goes away. You need to have some type of talent to achieve those numbers. Maybe if the Redskins run the offense that Griffin was successful at they will see the Griffin from his rookie year.

Mariucci -  Gruden is not going to go to the offense that made Griffin successful because he wants to run his own thing. This is a fascinating story with RG3 because we thought Griffin was going to revolutionize the game at the QB position. It's been very unusual to see Jay Gruden at the podium talking so openly about his QB. I think he thought Cousins was more like Andy Dalton and was suited for his offense.

Irving-  Before Gruden got  the job he climbed on RG3's back and supported him in front of Dan Snyder so he could get the HC job. He told Snyder "dont worry this is my guy I'm going to coach him up and everything is going to be fine".  (As Irving climbs on Mariucci's back) ... But now that he's not winning with Griffin he's jumping off RG3's back. Saying stuff like" I don't care who the Redskins QB is."

There's always a story with the Washington Redskins!

Problem is Jay is trying to run his offfense with the piece's that fit Kyle's offfense. Especially the O Line.

True, but it's Jay's inability to adjust his system to the players strengths. During the preseason the running game looked as good as ever. Since the first half of the Houston game it appears Jay refuses to run the ball, which is probably the only thing the O Line can do halfway decent.
