Steve Young via PFT: Coaches have told me RG3 doesn’t put in the time

Okay, this totally contradicts what was said about Robert by the Shanahans and Gruden

Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young says he knows the problem with Robert Griffin III: He doesn’t work hard enough.

Young said on the Michael Kay Show that he has spoken with coaches who have worked with Griffin, and those coaches told him that Griffin simply doesn’t spend the long hours studying film that an NFL quarterback needs.

I’ve talked to his previous coaches, people I really trust and admire, that know quarterbacks. He doesn't put the time in,” Young said.

Young didn’t mention any of those “previous coaches” by name, but it’s not a leap to infer that he’s referring to Mike Shanahan, who was Washington’s head coach for Griffin’s first two seasons.

Shanahan was the 49ers’ offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1994, when Young was having his three best seasons as the 49ers’ starting quarterback. Shanahan and Young have been close for years.

According to Young, it’s the mental side of the game that makes a good quarterback in the NFL, and Young believes that Griffin needs to spend more time developing the mental side of the game during the offseason.

“Success is really about expertise,” Young said. “May, June, July work, and going to school.”

Much like Griffin, Young was once an athletic quarterback who needed time to learn how to be a pocket passer. Young thinks it’s harder for great runners like Griffin to develop as passers because they always assume they can fall back on running if they need to.

“Guys that can use their legs, it’s like they’re not desperate. Guys who can’t use their legs are more desperate so they’ll put more time in,” Young said.

And according to Young, Griffin isn't putting the time in. That’s what’s holding him back.

Guess who's back...back again...leaking ****...just like 2013.

Lots of smoke usually means a pretty big fire.

the comments Young made can easily translate to what we see on the field. Not putting in the study to not reading the field properly, not throwing on time to the right places..

Robert's got to take a step down from the ego train, learn college is gone, BMOC doesn't apply unless you earn it.

Man, Steve got in the league at 24 years of age and didnt do **** until he was 30 years old.  Im not talking down on a HOF'er but damn, give the kid some time.  He's barely completed a full seasons worth of games in the new offense.  Talk about microwave culture these days.

So much negativity and anonymous reporting in the last 12 months, it starts to wear down your love of the team.

“I don’t think anybody in the history of the league has played at his level,” Shanahan said. “At least over the last 40 years, when I take a look at the numbers and what he has done, I don’t think anybody has played at his level. As we’ve talked about before, he’s got a unique skill set — his ability to throw, drop back, play action, put a threat on a defense with his running ability — and he will just get better and better. He’s just scratching the surface. And the reason I say that is because he works at it.”

So which one is it Shanny? He works hard or not enough??

I'm sure it's Shanahan driven but that in and of itself doesn't mean it's not true.  Right now the work on the field is reflective of poor mechanics, and film study.  It's certainly not the only thing wrong with the team but it's a part.

Best thing Robert can do is shut everyone up with his play.  Whatever it takes him to do that, he needs to be doing.

I think you're in for a rude awakening.   The flaws that RGIII haven't ever been fixed.  No one fixes pocket presence.   This is his third year in the NFL and he's still taking 5 step drops on a 3 step play?   Why is he looking at the wrong side of the field?  These issues are rarely, if ever, corrected by NFL quarterbacks.   It's time to cut bait.

Again, are they talking about conditioning?  I tend to think they are.   How else do you explain what we see?

So you're taking actual quotes from coaches and saying they're wrong? But Steve Young sites "coaches say" and it's the truth?

Terry Shea on RG3:

“He looked 100% healthy,” Shea said, via USA Today. “I didn’t let up on him and, boy, he kept coming — and he reminded me of the old Robert Griffin that I knew coming out of Baylor for those eight-10 weeks we worked together in 2012. He could have very easily lost it given the year he had. I put him through a gantlet of drills. And Robert made all the throws, showing great skills. It sure appeared to me that he took that next step as a pocket passer.”

This was from his offseason working with him. But RG3 doesn't try to improve.

I really like Steve Young, but I was just thinking yesterday how he has really been down on RG since the Shannatan incident last year.  He used to speak highly of RG, but since the incident, it's almost like he is downing RG to defend his buddy.

Regardless though, it's easy to believe what he is saying based on the on-field product.

Shanahan was Young's OC with the 49ers.

I'm not sure I believe this, I think he puts in the time based on everything we have seen since he's been here.

Not that I buy this report, but I heard the same thing about Orakpo... literally, for 5 straight years.

Will tat POS EVER leave this franchise alone?

Did he not do enough damage and make enough dollars out of us for so little?

Any time I see anything Redskins related from Steve Young or Adam Schefter I lose immediate interest.

Hail

Has it ever crossed your mind that you could be on the wrong side?
