autoidiodyssey
From the link: Parliament Hill has come under attack today after a man with a rifle shot a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial in downtown Ottawa, before seizing a car and driving to the doors of Parliament Hill's Centre Block nearby. MPs and other witnesses reported several shots fired inside Parliament, and a gunman has been confirmed dead inside the building. The soldier's condition is not known as this time. Police sources say there is more than one suspect, and shots have been reported at other locations surrounding Parliament Hill as the downtown area remains in police lockdown. G.A.C.O.L.B.
Wow, was just watching last night's BBC World News (on PBS, midnight, really recommend) and one of their top stories was Canada raising their terrorism alert level after hearing a bunch of "chatter" and some Muslim convert ran over two soldiers in his truck, killing one on Monday. I was just reading about that hit and run. The guys father called the police because he was worried that the guy had been radicalized and wanted to go to Syria to fight. Canada pulled his passport. I wonder if this is related. Today's shooting sounds like a coordinated attack.

Today's shooting sounds like a coordinated attack. Yeah I think they said he had a ticket for Turkey when they pulled his passport. Earlier this year. He had been monitored ever since. Had a high speed chase after running over the soldiers and ended up getting shot and killed by police. But yeah, pretty scary that Canada knew something was coming, in their country, and still couldn't stop it.
SWFLSkins
Hard to stop someone totally committed to terrorism without fear of dying. It's a wtf kind of God are you following. Forget being Muslim, the common core of being should tell you this is wrong and worthless.
abdcskins
Rare for such a calm and peaceful country as Canada. Sad.
GoSkins0721
I just finished a project in Ottawa where I spent many, many nights at the Fairmont Hotel (the castle in the pictures) & the Westin hotel (inside the Rideau Center Mall). The Parliament buildings are right next to the Fairmont. It's a beautiful city. This makes me sad...
autoidiodyssey
From watching reports it sounds like security for Canada's Parliament is, or was, pretty lax compared to British Parliament or the U.S. Capitol. CNN reported that the guards at the doors of Canada's Parliament are unarmed. I work on Capitol Hill and can say that seeing Capitol Police officers walking around outside with rifles and shotguns is pretty common. I get the impression that a guy running towards the Capitol with a rifle would not get very far, certainly not inside the building.
G.A.C.O.L.B.
Yeah was just wondering how the hell someone got into their Parliament building with a gun.

GoSkins0721
It's Canada. You can walk up to & walk onto the steps of the Parliament building. And the other government buildings in that area. The buildings sit several hundred feet back from the main drag with the road entrances blocked by iron fences & monitored by the RCMP. But anybody walking along the street can stroll onto the grounds & walk up to the building. The Canadians I worked with up there made fun of the US Embassy (basically behind the Parliament buildings) because of all of the security fences & cement barricades around the building. artmonkforHOF
What a ****ty day. I'm in vacation in Pittsburgh & catch wind of the news in the morning. I had a few things planned so I went & did those things & got a text from my brother. He told me that the solider- a reservist- was our friend's cousin Nathan Cirillo. I had only met Nate a few times, but can confirm he had a smile that was huge & could put anyone at ease with it. I think the guards at parliament hill where armed but taken by surprise, only 2 on duty as it was at an employee & press entrance where passes are only given after a throughough screening process. Nate was stationed at the tomb of the unknown soldier with a rifle that was unloaded. For those who do, please pray for the Cirillo family. I haven't spoken to my friend yet today, I figured he has enough to deal with today, I'll give him a call tomorrow. He loved Nate like a little brother, and I know this just has to be crushing him. RIP Nate, you will be missed.
China
RIP Nate, you will be missed. Two dogs owned by Cpl. Nathan Cirillo, the Canadian soldier who was killed in Ottawa on Thursday, were spotted peeking out from under a fence at his home. Cpl. Cirillo featured the dogs prominently in his Instagram photographs, where he called the German Shepherd "my baby girl." Destino
I hope Canada doesn't let this scare them into changing who they are. In some ways the urge to stop something from happening again can be more dangerous than what it's intended to defend against.
Audible_Red40
I'm born, raised and living in Ottawa. Very sad day/week. RIP Cpl. Cirillo. The pictures of those dogs brings chills to me. The saddest thing is that a 5 year old boy won't see his father any more. We have never experienced anything like this before. We are proud of our gun control in this country. Homicide is at it's lowest rate in 40 years. Security will be beefed up no doubt. It's weird that the Nation's Capital Parliament has unarmed security guards. I am sure that will change. I remember one time visiting the grounds at the White House with my then fiancé in 2010 and went to take a picture in an area where a security guard approached us as we were in a restricted area and the guard was armed. Nothing to be scared of, but knowing that it is fully protected was a sight that we've never seen and were not frightened in any way, but felt more safe as "tourists". Ironically the game we attended that weekend was the "Monday Night Massacre" versus the Iggles. Sometimes we take for granted even the everyday phrases we use, especially in sports.
