Redskins Drop 37-34 Decision To The Eagles

Recommended Posts

Well, this was truly the good, the bad, and the ugly.

First, kudos to Manchild and Johnsbass for calling out the return yards as a problem. In the end, that may have been the real reason we lost. The eagles had a short field all day. I am not quite to the point of getting rid of the new STs coach, but not far. We can't keep having these mishaps. To me, the decision goes back to keeping Kai instead of Hocker. Kai missed a critical FG and we have our punter doing KOs. That was OK as a temporary thing, but we need a complete kicker.

Really hard to tell about the D. The reality is the iggles have a very good off if you can;t get pressure. All of a sudden our pressure dried up. I am still not sure if we know what we have.

I do not like a run on first down from the 41 with under 3 minutes left needing a FG to tie but a TD will likely win it. If you do, make it a draw or something.

This one stung but there were some positives. I had this as a loss from the beginning. It was actually closer than I thought.

They did keep the Eagles O off the field for the entire 1st quarter - that was good. Built up a nice lead, too.

They did let them put up 30 in the other 3 quarters - that was bad. Blew the nice lead by halftime, too.

Nothing special about the Special Teams play. Giving up a 100 yd+ TD return plus the clank by Kai made a big difference. I noted last week (with some dissenting views) about allowing too many KO returns. They gave up 50 yards on two more besides the TD. If you can't kick it out of the endzone then you better tackle. Or vice versa.

Penalties - ugghhh. Again. 10 for 131 yards. It's something that is fixable. It needs to be fixed. Especially really stupid ones; like Bakers. I don't know if he'll get a suspension out of it but I would not be surprised.

Both teams stuffed the run pretty well. Neither team gave up a sack. Cousins looked good, other than the int which was rather ugly, but can't complain about his results; 400+ yds & 3 TDs. You should win games when your O puts up 34 points.

A night's sleep did not make this loss any better.

The special team play is still unacceptable, it is the primary reason we have 2 losses in 3 games.

An absence of discipline that resulted in a lot of penalties in a big game is a concern.

Injuries are expected but we are going beyond what is expected, not sure if it is bad luck or a poor conditioning program.

Gruden is doing a great job as offensive coordinator, but that is not his job and he needs to focus on discipline, special teams, and conditioning.

What an awesome game... It had every element you could ask for in a NFCE rivalry game. Unfortunately, it ended up as a loss. As I stated the other day, our D stats were a bit skewed because of the terrible offenses we went up against through the first two weeks. This was the showing I expected, not good, not bad. Once again our special teams has cost us a game. 18 points (2 return TDs, missed fg, blocked extra point) in our two losses. It's impressive how year in and year out we consistently find a way to be terrible in special teams. We need to get Lorenzo back.

We're obviously all disappointed in the outcome, but the fact of the matter is with RG injured, there was the potential for our season to be over before week 3. Kirk has come in and played unbelievably well; he went into Philly and dominated. Philly has the #1 offense, we won't be matched up against that every game. He proved a lot yesterday, would have liked for him to have hit Garcon on that 4th downplay and led a scoring drive, unfortunately didn't happen. Now we have the Hawks coming to town, if he plays with the same confidence, we win this game.

Hail CTSkin -  I think we have the giants in town first.

After sleeping on the game, I think I am more disgusted than I was yesterday. I am tired as hell of the STs gaffs. There needs to be major changes. remove the STs gaffs and this team is very likely 3-0.

We have to beat the giants. If we lose to them, then the 3-13 and 4-12 prognosticators will be right!

ST's Coach made a good adjustment after the td from the KO. Since Way can't kick out of the endzone, he told him to kick to the right side making the returner either sprint over to catch it while our ST players had time to thwart any run back or it just bounces out of bounds. The ko runback was about as wide open straight up the middle as it gets. We got some better the rest of the way but c'mon, that's pathetic and some players need chewing out in the film room. Can't believe the coach told them to leave the middle of the field open...blame rests on players.

Chip Kelly is an offensive master. He took our pass rush away by quick passing all day on us, not an accident, it's what they practice! Haslett got out coached on this philosophy, but he won't be alone this year, superb job of taking away one of our ''strengths''. No one should have got too giddy about our #1 defense last week against 2 pathetic offenses, the Eagles showed us who we are which is a very good run defense team, good tackling team, but also one that is susceptible to getting burned on the long ball.

Cousins is a qb that I can get behind and support. Fantastic day, he's the real deal and how much better could he be if he had 3 seasons of being the #1? If they trade him away at some point a team is getting a player that will have a successful career. At 6'3'' he seems to be the right size, arm strength, and intelligence.

Finally the Redskins look like a physical team capable of punching every team in the mouth and dare you to get back up. I think this is a reflection of Gruden, we all knew that he would be learning on the job to be a head coach and if this game is an indication of his influence then I'm going to support him because I like where we are heading.

Injuries- too bad we got so many players hurt and didn't get the win out of it. DHall is gone for the year I assume, next man up was Biggers and Breeland. I like Breeland alot and absolutely more than Biggers, let the young guys play and if by playing them they turn out like Amerson then we get better.

You are so right on discipline and penalties, I think they go hand in hand. Watching the Seahawks game the dbs look to be holding as much as last year, sometimes I just don't get how the refs work the game.

Older teams get hurt more than young teams, we are an older team and an infusion of youth over the next 3 years will help with injuries. We won't be immune to injuries, but will be less.

A night's sleep didn't help me either and have read very little about the game. I'll go back and watch the game again tonight to get a better read.

After re-watching the game, I have not changed my mind. There'd are definitely somethings to build on, but some ugly consistencies exist. They will not be a surprise to anyone but I will state them any way:

When it's time to make a play, to really make a difference, we consistently come up small. This can change and may change. I liked DJax getting loose and scoring. That will get him involved. But as much as I liked Kirk, he was awful that last drive when we had 1st and 10 at their 41!  A FG ties it. All you really need is a first down. That 4th down pass was really bad.

But the loss was not Kirk's fault. He will get better under those situations. However, there is a trend for him. He starts great and gets more and more pedestrian as the game goes on.

Foles simply had a great game. The D was actually not bad. What a tremendous job on the running game and keeping the screens to a minimum. A few missed assignments in the passing game, but was actually better than the numbers will show.

The STs were again a problem (Again, I tip my hat to Manchild and Johnsbass who pointed this out last week). We gave them a short field all day. And they took advantage.

This Thursday is a must. WE cannot afford to lose that game or it's a long season. HTTR!!
