Burgold
So, as some of you know the Washington office of VOR rather suddenly closed leaving me somewhat relieved, but also a bit adrift. I'm in the happy world of submitting applications, but I've had a couple people come to me and say, "We miss the Prism!" and it made me wonder if I should try to reconstitute it as a podcast or show for NPR/PRX. I know enough people to believe that should I build it could find a platform to broadcast it. So, in thinking about what I need to make this work I've looked at some crowd funding sites and am wondering has anyone experience (success or failure) with these? Any advice before I put my line into the mercurial virtual waters looking for nibbles? What catches your eye? What info must you include? I've been a radio guy, but it seems that most Kickstarters have a video component... should I build a video package or pilot? If/when I try this would any of you be willing to spread the word or even support a radio/podcast project? The Prism was a science, technology and health program that celebrated breakthroughs and discoveries. We looked through the crystal at surgeons who gave quadriplegics their hands back, to scientists mapping black holes, and anthropologists who discovered new pyramids. Then, sometimes we covered the lighter side of life with interviews with Mark Hamill or Rob Paulson (Pinky and the Brain, TMNT, etc.). Anyway, any advice, wisdom, or worthy encouragement/discouragement would be welcome. More, if there's something you particularly liked or disliked in my work over the years let me know and I'll try to keep that aspect alive. One thing I will definitely do freed from VOR is produce much richer text stories/transcripts to go with the audio.
daveakl
I'll kick in $100 for a 2% equity stake. (But I have no experience using crowd funding other then reading a lot of people use them for start ups)
Burgold
Thanks for the support, Dave. It's odd getting back into the freelance world and breaking that inertia. You develop different habits working for a news bureau. Luckily, a bunch of those I'm reaching out to seem to still like me.
PleaseBlitz
I crowd funded my bar-study course. I used GoFundMe, which worked pretty well. KickStarter doesnt really require you do do anything. I'm sure you are aware of the Potato Salad Kickstarter. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/324283889/potato-salad
