Redskins / Texans Prediction Thread: Yea Baby, Football is BACK!

The crisp autumn wind blows across the barren ground.

OK, maybe its more like the baking sun beating down on muscle-strained players, but football is back!

The 2014 season is upon us, preseason has come and gone, and left us with more questions than answers. Tensions and expectations are high, as the Redskins travel down to Houston to take on the Texans.

The Redskins have a new coach, Jay Gruden, and Redskin fans are hoping he can turn around a team which frankly stunk on ice last year.

So many questions, so few answers? Is Robert Griffin III going to be in 2012 form or 2013 form? Will the defense be able to stop anyone? Will special teams be able to find the stadium? There is no possible way to judge any of this in preseason, but we're all hoping this season is brighter than last year.

The Texans defense will be a very good test for the Redskin o-line; JJ Watt, Clowney, Cushing, and the Texans defense will be looking to wreak havoc in the backfield, but the Texans offense is very much in question.

The Redskins get some firepower on offense; the biggest splash was DeSean Jackson, who will hopefully take some coverage off of Garcon, and a healthy Jordan Reed and a good running game in Alfred Morris, this will be an exciting game to watch.

Look for a physical, maybe slightly clumsy game, being the first regular season game of the year, there will be a hiccup here and there, but here's to starting the season off on the right foot.

24-3 Redskins!

Our offense will be able to use the aggressiveness on the Houston defense against  itself and get them on their heals quickly (in the second half, after a 3-0 first half of awesome defense and terrible offense).

DHall and Amerson will lock down their one WR. Our D line will be relentless attacking Fitz. Our LBs will contain and make Foster want to quit football.

TDs for CT/Lache, 88 and Rambo.

Defense looks a great deal more improved than last year. Even with the suspension of Merriweather, the secondary is surprisingly aggressive. The D keeps us in this one.

Refs almost blow the game for us with an unnecessary and controversial holding call on Hall. RGIII throws a couple of picks as he continues to struggle with Gruden's system. ALMO goes for 110 and a touch.

That crisp autumn wind was blowing this morning grabbing my morning paper (what the hell man?).

Anyhow putting all of the RGIII panic aside, Skins face a stiff challenge in this one early.  The Texans show some grit, but are simply outgunned.

I see us getting quality play from RGIII & AlMo, and controlling the tone of the game.  Their D keeps em in it (forcing 2 turnovers), but Washington cements it in the closing stages of the 4th Quarter.

The defense looked good last preseason and we saw how that ended up. I'm still not sold on it. Foster will be back and Johnson is getting comfortable with Fitzpatrick.

However, I'm predicting a win because I'm sure that Gruden is gonna unleash a RG3 tailored offense and unveil that the preseason was just that...the preseason

Yeah, that's true BOTW.  But the scheduling factors in here.  2 years ago, we blindsided New Orleans.  Last year, Philly blindsided us with that Offense.  We expect a good Houston Defense (not necessarily a good Texans team), and I don't see a radically changed Houston Offense.

Let's hope that Defensive play wasn't a mirage.  If nothing else, the tackling should be vastly improved.  And I'll take that.

Guys we all need to be honest.  ZERO idea.  RGIII may come out and look like he did in his first game in the NFL or he may look like his first game of last season with the Texas front.  I just don't know, but I have a feeling if we endup winning it will be the D that does it for us.

Just so I can say I had a guess.

Debbie downer here!

I just don't see our OL being able to contain Houston's rush. RG3 will be running for his life and I still question his decision making in that situation. I see at least 1 sack fumble and a couple of eye covering monster hits.

I do think it is close, but low scoring and a bit ugly.

17-14 Houston. We score a late TD.

Bad news:  Clowny may possibly be able to outquick Trent Williams and JJ Watt will have no problem at all getting past our RT and RG, and even the HB/FB/TE we have helping that side.

Good news:  There is a remedy for a firece pass rush and that remedy is something Jay Gruden is KNOWN for and that is screen passes.  Sometimes the rush is so strong that you can do HB draw plays to get Almo an easy 5-8 yards.  If you're successful with the screens, alot of times the safety will bite on the fake screen and leave a lightning bolt like Desean Jackson 1 on 1 vs the CB and sprinting down field.

One can dream, can't he?   ;)

I think Gruden has some wrinkles he hasnt shown that will help RG3. This offense has looked lackluster so far but will rely heavily on the rush to slow down the pass rush. I think it works out for us this week with the defense showing some improvement.

WHOA!!  I must take serious issue with this statement.  Trent Williams is quite possibly the BEST player on our entire Roster.  I think he is.  The man is a 2-time Pro Bowler & blocked a certain #94 that used to play for our Hated Rival (and that guy is as fierce a Pass Rusher as has ever come into the NFL).  That dude was faaaar tougher to block than a Rookie making his 1st NFL start will be.

The protections have to be slid to help out Polumbus (but that's nothing new) & 71 stays on an island and is expected to beat a Rookie.

Let's show a little respect to one of The BEST Left Tackles in The NFL.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with everything you just said.  However I have seen Trent struggle with the smaller 4-3 DEs that are quicker then he is.  He's not going to be able to put his hands on Clowney at the line of scrimmage to slow him down.  With the technique the Texans are playing, it benefits Clowneys speed and quickness.

If Clowney was the type to make contact, then shed the block to get to his man then thats one thing, but Clowneys only move right now is to outrun the blocker and he has shown to do that.  I've even seen Ryan Kerrigan do it to him a few times in practice.

I'm picturing Almo or Robert not aware of how fast he can get into the backfield and stripping the ball for an easy Texans TD.

In the flipside, I see our offense scoring more points on their defense then their offense will score on our defense, so to give a prediction I'll say 24-13 Redskins.

This is about where I am, too. I think Houston's line is gonna eat us up. Every offensive snap I'll be wincing. Watt + Clowney are just sick.

Last year has tempered my expectations.

He hasn't shown his bubble screens, WR screens and his draw plays. These are something he did often in Cincinnatti. He has been working on the plays that rg3 needs much more work on this preseason. We will win this game 28-13.

20-17

houston d-line shreds skins o-line, pounds robert into the dirt multple times. robert responds with scorching plays and gorgeous touchdowns, eventually gets knocked out of the game. cousins comes in and drives down the field for a field goal which turns out to be game winning

Okay.  The Rookie is talented.  I understand that...but I personally believe that you are selling our Pro Bowl Left Tackle very short.

This matchup is a Washington advantage; a Pro Bowler vs a Rookie.

Sometimes I think we get outta hand here with talking up the opponent.

(and feel free to rub my face in it if I'm wrong)
