I think we should call it the Ray Rice rule.

In a letter to NFL owners Thursday, the league announced that it will levy stiffer sanctions for domestic violence offenses: Six games for a first offense and a lifetime ban for a second offense, reports CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora.

According to ESPN.com's Jane McManus, players facing a lifetime ban would be able to apply for reinstatement under the new policy.

The change comes a month after the NFL suspended Ravens running back Ray Rice two games for a physical incident with his soon-to-be wife at an Atlantic City hotel last February. In March, Rice was indicted on one count of aggravated assault, and by May, Ricehad been accepted into a pretrial intervention program, which meant that he will avoid prosecution and possible jail time.

Have to imagine far fewer would admit to anything now.  I think it would have to be convictions, otherwise they expose their players to fraudulent claims.  And then they open themselves up to lawsuits from players for getting bans for something they didn't do.

After mulling this over for the last couple days, I have an ominous feeling that this just might deter battered women from coming forward, now that the stakes have been raised significantly.

Lets say Joe Schmo smacks his wife/gf around. The wife/gf may be more apt to stay quiet, when money/livelihood is at stake. I'm positive thats one of the main reasons why Ray Rices fiance decided to stick with him.

Women finding reasons to stay in any normal violent relationship is commonplace enough. Add money, and the thought of losing that money to the equation, and the man just may have gotten even more power to manipulate her with.

Well, that didn't take long.

49ers DE Ray McDonald arrested on domestic violence charges

Ray McDonald was selected in the third round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

It won’t take long for the NFL’s new policy on domestic violence to be tested.

Days after league commissioner Roger Goodell sent a letter to all NFL owners detailing harsher punishments for such illegal incidents, the first case emerged Sunday morning.

49ers defensive end Ray McDonald has been arrested on felony domestic violence charges, according to police. No bail has been set for McDonald.

San Jose police Sgt. Heather Randol says the 29-year-old defensive end was taken into custody early Sunday after officers responded to a home in an upscale neighborhood.

To make matters worse, the alleged victim is pregnant, according to Damian Trujillo of NBC Bay Area. While the case must develop for any on-field discipline to take course, an eventual suspension could surpass the first-offense baseline of six games, according to the new policy.

49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh has taken a firm stance on violence against women. Former 49ers safety Donte Whitner told reporters that Harbaugh said to his players in 2012 such incidents would not be tolerated.

“He said that we can do anything in the world and we can come and talk to him and he’ll forgive us except put our hands on women,” Whitner said in 2012. “If you put your hand on a woman, then you’re done in his book.

McDonald, who was a full-time starter last season in San Francisco, was also arrested for DUI in 2010.

Goodell instituted harsher penalties after he suspended Ravens running back Ray Rice for two games in July. Goodell noted last week that Rice’s punishment was far too lenient and future conduct violations would be met with action.

The 49ers are becoming worse than the other team in the bay area since Harbaugh and Baalke took over when it comes to crime. The fanbase is getting Raiders bad too in terms of violent outbursts.

I doubt what Whitner said will come to pass.

Shame they run a 3-4 though, with Aldon and hopefully McDonald gone for awhile they could get some serious media goodwill/cover and merch sales like crazy by putting Michael Sam at the end of their rotation.

Seriously.  But since these 9ners are one of the 'sexy' teams of the NFL, I expect the criticism to be very slow in manifesting itself.  But Harbaugh inherited a pretty good team & it looks like he's running em into the ground.

And as 49er fans go, yo those guys are crazy!!  Youtube is full of San Fran fan fights:

And for good measure:

When will they get called out for their hooliganism?
