REDSKINS CLAIM P TRESS WAY

LOUDOUN COUNTY, Va. – The Washington Redskins announced today that they have acquired punter Tress Way via waiver claim. In addition, the team waived punter Blake Clingan.

Way (6-1, 215) originally entered the NFL as a college free agent with the Chicago Bears on April 28, 2013. He was waived by the Bears on Aug. 25, 2013. He later re-signed with the Bears on Jan. 1, 2014 before being waived on Aug. 18.

Way punted collegiately at Oklahoma from 2008-12, appearing in 53 games with 250 punts for 10,988 yards (44.0 avg.) with 36 touchbacks and 91 punts downed inside the 20. He owns Oklahoma’s school record with 71 career punts of 50 or more yards.

Way, 24, attended Union H.S. in Tulsa, Okla., where he was a member of the all-state teams for both The Oklahoman and Tulsa World. He was born on April 18, 1990.

Clingan (6-3, 223) originally joined the Redskins as a free agent on April 9, 2014.

this punter battle is a disaster.

When you cut someone and bring a new player in off the street to compete, one can't argue that the punting situation is at least in need of some help.

Being very optimistic, maybe this guy will guy will suddenly get it and earn the job.

One can hope.

This does not pass the smell test.  Awful late to be uncertain about who your punter is ... an above average punter is critical to a playoff contender.

Nonetheless ... great moniker!

Yeah, if they'd just cut Clingan and signed a different position, you could say that Malone convinced them that he's the guy (though I haven't seen it yet), but when you cut a guy halfway through the preseason and bring in another, that tells me Clingan was awful and Malone isn't doing all that much better.

I'm not a "punters mean everything" guy, but I don't like this much.  Of course, as long as he can give the team 35 yards and enough hang time to stop most returns, fine.  We can live with that for one season.

Shorter kicks typically mean better coverage. Think Mike Bragg. It seems punters are not asked to kick directionally anymore, so having a less than stellar punter shouldn't be a huge deal.  They just boom it at the end zone and hope the gunners can down it at the one. That they actually succeed only in doing -  perhaps 10% of the time.

Just don't be Mr Frank Shank and we should survive. It should not be hard to beat out Malone, obviously.

If our offense can dominate, as we are built to do, it's really a non issue.

I probably value good punters more than most. Sure, they're just a punter. But field position is so important, I think they're value is always understated.

Same with kickers.

Do you know what Tom Brady's legacy would be without Adam Viniteri? "Can't win the big one"

Every SB they won, and the tuck rule game came down to a FG.

I'm always surprised how hard it is to find a good punter.  Only one got drafted this year, so out of all those other guys you'd think they're be a couple that were pretty good you could bring in here as UDFA.  The competition for those guys around the league can't be that great.

Back in the days of Deacon Jones and such, kickers and punters were loathed. But in those days, there wasn't a premium on STs.

Kickers and Punters are just as vital as the other positions. As been evident over the last 15+ years, we've not been able to find either one on a steady basis and it's cost us.

I would have loved to have had what the Raiders had with Janikowski and Lechler. The Raiders were laughed at for that.

Punters are weird. You have Kirby Van Der Kamp, widely considered the top rookie punter, go undrafted and not even get a training camp invite. The best of the 2014 draft class can't even get an invite over guys like Malone and Clingan? I got to think that somewhere out there is a decent punter to be had for essentially free.

I'm down with the folks that have expressed the importance of punting.  Given where the Gruden program stands (mere days before Year 1), a strong kicking game could keep us in a lotta ballgames.  I'll admit that I haven't followed the punter issue closely, but drafting competition for Forbath made it clear that this Head Coach is serious about the kicking game.  I hope he gets this one right.

Punter Colton Schmidt of SF has given Andy Lee all the competition he can handle this year in punting during the preseason. He also is a KO specialist and can be used as an emergency FG kicker as well. Keep an eye on this guy as a possible replacement for Malone/Way.
