ES Coverage & Interactive Game Day Thread: 2014 Redskins vs Browns

8/18/14

The last time the Redskins faced the Cleveland Browns, it was in 2012. The Redskins defeated them handily 38-21, bringing the Redskins record to 8-6 and the Browns to a depressing 5-9. The Browns would go on to lose their last two games, finish 5-11 and finish last in their division, continuing a nine-year playoff drought. The Redskins, of course, would finish the season 10-6, winning the NFC East and making the playoffs for the first time since 2007.

In just two years, oh how things have changed. The Redskins find themselves coming off of an abysmal 3-13 season. They have a new coaching staff and a ton of questions surrounding their franchise player Robert Griffin III. And the Browns have something they haven't had in a long time ... hope.

Thanks to Johnny Manziel, there is finally excitement in Cleveland. And much like that Redskins team in 2012, Griffin's first season, Cleveland fans are hoping that their new quarterback can achieve miracles. Redskins fans, meanwhile, are just hoping we can make it through an entire game without someone arguing that the team should change its name.

It's hard to gauge much from a Week Two preseason match up, but these are two transitional teams looking to get things back on track after some rocky years. Hopefully tonight will give us a sense of where these two teams are headed. Is Manziel the quarterback of the future? Is RG III fully recovered from his injury? Are both of these teams finally ready to be the perennial bottom dwellers of their divisions? Tonight may not give us definitive answers to these questions, but it will certainly give us a few clues.

For the Washington Redskins:

-          The following Redskins are not expected to play:

o   No. 25 RB Chris Thompson

o   No. 40 TE Mike Caussin

o   No. 53 LB Darryl Sharpton

o   No. 97 DE Jason Hatcher

-          No. 99 Jarvis Jenkins is expected to start in place of Hatcher at right defensive end.

For the Cleveland Browns:

-          The following Browns are not expected to play:

o   No. 13 WR Nate Burleson

o   No. 22 DB Buster Skrine

o   No. 26 DB Pierre Desir

o   No. 35 DB Isaiah Trufant

o   No. 36 K’Waun Williams

o   No. 38 DB Aaron Berry

o   No. 41 DB T.J. Heath

o   No. 50 LB Darius Eubanks

o   No. 52 LB Eric Martin

o   No. 62 OL Michael Bowie

o   No. 69 OL Randall Harris

o   No. 74 OL Paul McQuistan

o   No. 92 DL Desmond Bryant

o   No. 96 LB Keith Pough

-          No. 98 Phil Taylor is expected to start in place of Bryant at left defensive end.

-          No. 21 Justin Gilbert is expected to start in place of Skrine at right cornerback.

8:04 PM - The Browns win the toss and have elected to receive.

8:07 PM - Ball snapped early and Kerrigan breaks through untouched for a sack? That's the Browns I know and love.

8:11 PM - Rocky start for the Browns. Johnny Football probably loves that as much as 'Skins fans do. Time to see what our boys can do on offense.

8:12 PM - I've missed you, RGIII.

8:17 PM - Morris coughs up the ball, but the Browns can't capitalize on it. The Redskins end up getting the ball back on the 20, so no real harm done. This game is certainly their's for the taking though if they can keep from shooting themselves in the foot.

8:20 PM - SLIDE!!!!

8:28 PM - Griffin with an ill-advised pass throws a pick, taking an easy field goal off the board. It's a good thing that this is just a preseason game because that's now a fumble and an interception killing any momentum this team had.

8:30 PM - And Johnny Football takes the field!

8:32 PM - Well, that was quick. Manziel's first pass is a bad one. And he follows it up by getting sacked by Kerrigan. It's a quick three-and-out for the much-hyped rookie.

8:37 PM - Well, that was kind of a slide.

8:41 PM - Way to end the quarter with some momentum. Griffin connects with Roberts for a 49-yard pass.

END OF FIRST QUARTER

0 - 0

8:47 PM - The Redskins try running up the middle three times in a row and fail to get in the end zone. Not sure why they wouldn't try something different, especially in a preseason game. They go for it on fourth down and come up short. That was another frustrating series (and likely the last one the starters will be involved in).

8:53 PM - RGIII finishes the day 6 of 9 for 112 yards and one interception. Morris finishes with 11 carries for 29 yards.

9:08 PM - Maybe the Redskins are just trying to get all of the turnovers out of their system in the preseason.

9:27 PM - Santana Moss does not age.

9:31 PM - The Redskins finally get some points on the board. Evan Royster runs it up the middle for six. 7-3

HALFTIME

7-3

9:54 PM - The Redskins finally put together an impressive-looking drive, capped off by a 14-yard pass from Cousins to Grant. 8 plays, 60 yards, 4 minutes and 21 seconds. 14-3

10:02 PM - Cleveland, it's not too late to start Rex Grossman.

10:08 PM - Thank God they asked the man who drives in circles for a living what he would do if he was coaching an NFL team.

END OF THIRD QUARTER

14-3

10:32 PM - It took four quarters and a heck of an effort by Lewis, by Manziel finally gets a touchdown pass. 16 plays, 68 yards. 14-10

10:35 PM - And now, the most underreported storyline of this game - Colt McCoy has a chance to get vengeance on his old team.

10:36 PM - No wait, he just threw a pick for a touchdown ... never mind. 14-17

10:46 PM - It's a barn burner! The Redskins hit a field goal to tie things up. 17-17

10:49 PM - Connor Shaw, the starting gig is yours for the taking. Just saying.

10:54 PM - A 54-yard field goal attempt by Cleveland sails to the right. Looks like these two teams are going to give us what we are all hoping for - overtime, baby!

11:00 PM - Thankfully McCoy has somewhere to be. He connects on a touchdown pass to Nick Williams. 6 plays, 56 yards, 3 minutes and 23 seconds. 24-17

11:08 PM - Ugh. Of course they catch it. 24-23

11:09 PM - Thank you, Cleveland, for going for two.

We get our first look at the full #Redskins #1 offense tonight as Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson will both play after missing last week.

Kyle Shanahan just walked over to shake hands with Jay Gruden and Jim Haslett.

Interesting. No Philly scouts.

That's cause Chip Kelly doesn't need scouts.  He's an offensive genius, remember?

(He also doesn't need star receivers either...in fact, if they'd let him, he could man all 22 positions with bums and he'd win SBs annually)

As expected, no Chris Thompson, Darryl Sharpton, Jason Hatcher or Mike Caussin. #Redskins

WTF?!  No CAUSSIN?!

I give up, that's it, I can't take it anymore.  After 30 years as a Skins fan I'm finally giving up.  If Caussin can't even play this team is FINISHED.  Might as well cancel the season and forfeit every game this year.  We have no hope.  I hate life.

One hour to kickoff here at FedEx Field. And probably 90 minutes or so to Manzielpalooza.

Considering his brother is coaching the team, I'm anxious to hear what Jon Gruden says about RG3 tonight. Should be interesting.

ESPN, who can take any story, blow it up, and run it into the ground, hasn't even mentioned the report that came out today. Weird.

Ditka on Griffin: "This guy is the poster boy for character, he is a high character individual, he a leader on that football team..."

Nice to hear someone on ESPN say that, especially in light of today's article

Both Jackson and Ditka believed one of the Skins biggest problems with Griffin last season was the lack of running game, though

And this is what we have to face on a weekly basis from non Skins fans every week. They take their cues from these guys. Way to do your homework, fellas.....
