ES Coverage Training Camp Day 8

Good Morning, I"m HapHaszard and I'll be your reporter for Day 8 of Training camp.  Its a beautiful day here at Bon Secours training facility, 72 degrees and sunny.  The fans are filtering in now and it looks like there willl be a good crowd for todays camp.

This will be my second day here and hopefully I won't make the same mistakes I made yesterday.  At least I will have an idea of where to go and where I'm allowed to stand.  Media is restricted to certain areas during practice.  I guess this is like any job it takes some experience to do it well.  Trying to read my notes from practice yesterday I realized I was looking at the receivers but not who was covering them.  Also some of the Veterans are not wearing their usual numbers so that caused me some confusion.

OK I'm off to grab some breakfast and coffee, stand by.....

Yesterday I pulled the rookie mistake of trying to see everything but saw little, today I concentrated on the Offensive Line drillls and the tight ends and running back drills.

Special Teams Drills

Today the drill seemed to be working on opening lanes for the return man, different blocking assignments and formations for left and right returns.

Practiced corner kickoffs

Offensive Line Drills

The oline drills seem to be blocking assignments to open running lanes for the running back.

One thing I have noticed that is a lot different than when I watched training camp under

Shannahan is that now the Assistant Coaching Staff seems to be more involved in training.

They seem to be more hands on

Tight End Drills

Tight end drills started with blocking assignments, along with the running backs. Special attention was  to getting low getting their hands on the chests and driving them back.

The next drill was getting their hands up and slapping the defensive players hands off to get off jambs and getting free.

The assistant coaches seem to be spending a lot of time on fundamental blocking and sheading blocks.

Tight Ends and Tackles Drills

Tackles and tight ends practicing different blocking assignments together left and right side.

Reed practicing run and turn and catch on side when it's not his turn to block.

Running Back Drills

Running backs are practicing blitz pickups it appears using upside down trash cans to represent linemen with lb's blitzing between them.

11 on 11

Refs were on the field throwing hankies for infractions.

The running game seem to be clicking much better today, Alfred Morris broke a few nice ones.

There was a beautiful pass from Griffin to Reed that went about 15 yards it might have been longer under game conditions since he hit him in stride, and he can break tackles.

Most of the completions were short to medium range.

Alfred Morris Presser

He was asked about the competion for third down back job, and he said that is was going great, he honestly loves competition.  He stated that his job wasn't solidified.  We may think it is but you never know in this business so he is working to keep his job.  He says they all are working to get better.

The question was asked if he was happy there were not the distractions from last year.

Yeah, I don't like controversy, honestly I'm glad its gone, I'm glad its behind us.

He was asked if a more physical training camp was helping him.

It helps a lot honestly, definitely with the soreness mainly.  Its getting those hits and knowing where defenders are coming from and how to protect yourself.

What does he expect from the upcoming practice with the Patriots

I guess for us to get better.  Its one thing to go against your own team.  A lot of times you know whats coming.  We know the drills.  Going against another team it gives you a different level of competion. With my teammates I try my best not to lower my shoulder on any of them or I try not to hurt them I'm more likely to drop my shoulder against an opposing team.

He was asked about the difference between power and zone running.

There isn't a difference. Power is my favorate play, just downhill plays. I love downhill running.

What does he think of Chris Thompson

Man he is a change of pace type of guy, he has gears other guys don't have. He is fast and an elusive runner.

The question was what DeSean Jackson does for the offense and if it means less touches for him.

I've never looked at it as if I was going to get less touches.  I got excited having him because he is going to take that extra defender out of the box, last year a lot of teams stacked the box on us.

We will have a breifing by Terry McAulay on rule changes in the NFL at 3pm so I'll post what I can gleen from that presser.

Rule Changes

Rolling up on side of legs of defender is now a foul.

No stopping game clock after a sack with in 2 minutes remaining.

Recovery of loose ball now reviewable

During review crews will have access with NY for consultaion but Ref is final decision.

Verbal Abuse will result in penalty, racial slurs sexual orientation slurs etc

Remember check BRBN section for a much better explaination from the Professionals. :)

Thanks  keep up the great work

Work, Ha! Screw that!. I'm just some schmuck sitting at my desk having fun on the internet. I'm in town and have seen that patch a bazillion times now. I just knew what it was. You're welcome, but any thanks for anything resembling work here should go to HapHaszard. Thanks Hap, from the both of us!
