Maryland receiver Stefon Diggs says he is '110 percent'

CHICAGO -- Stefon Diggs has typically been out on the practice field with Maryland quarterback C.J. Brown at least once a week leading up to preseason practice.

He has been running routes, stretching his legs and continuing to work his way back from the broken his right fibula that ended his season just seven games into last year.

And while the leg may have prevented him from taking part in the majority of spring practice, the junior wide receiver said Monday at the Big Ten media days that it's no longer an issue.

"I'm 110 percent," Diggs said.

Diggs said he actually feels faster than he did prior to the injury. “They say when you break your leg you get a little taller and a little faster, and I got both, I think,” he said.

Diggs' game is built on speed and athleticism. He ranked eighth nationally in all-purpose yards as a freshman in 2012 and had 34 catches for 587 yards and three touchdowns last season before suffering the injury Oct. 19 at Wake Forest.

Brown said Monday that Diggs is “definitely back to his old Stefon. If not, he’s better.”

One of the Terps' new rivals went a step further.

“Diggs is one of the best players in the country in my opinion,” Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said.

One on One Coverage: Stefon Diggs

With all of the injuries last season, is staying healthy something that concerns you about this year?

Diggs: "That's a part of football. Things happen. You just have to take them in stride. Things are never going to go exactly how you planned. Whatever's thrown at you, you've got to tackle it."

Which teammates impressed you during seven-on-sevens?

Diggs: "They all looked good. Everybody's putting in the work ... I look forward to going into the season and putting the pads on."

What have your teammates been saying this summer?

Diggs: "A lot of hard work. Different D-line coach. They're happy, they say they love him back there and they can't wait to get to work."

Did anyone individually impress you?

Diggs: Yannick [Ngakoue]. He's been working on his weight, his speed. I think he's really going to be something special this year.

"When you come in raw like that, you've got to conform to the system and show that you can be coach-able. He just took it in stride and has become a great student and athlete. I've seen him take strides and I really think he's going to be something special this year, not only because of his ability but because he's putting in the work."

Maryland's highly touted freshmen will have to earn starting jobs on O-line, Edsall says

CHICAGO —

Damian Prince is the big name. He is the high profile five-star recruit, the prized member of Maryland’s recruiting class this year whom analysts have projected as a future NFL offensive lineman.

Likewise, Derwin Gray is another big-time incoming freshman with the size (6 feet 5, 300 pounds) and the strength to develop into a high-level starting right tackle.

But neither will be handed a starting job.

Maryland coach Randy Edsall made that clear Tuesday.

The offensive line was an area of weakness for the Terps last season, but Edsall has been happy with the progress the returning linemen have made under new offensive line coach Greg Studrawa.

“When you look at [Prince and Gray] off the film, we thought and still feel they’re very good players. … But we don’t have to force-feed them,” Edsall said at Big Ten media days. “There’s guys in front of them that have experience, that have played and won games for us, so those guys are going to have to go in and beat guys out because I’ve got guys that I know and have played at this level and have helped us win.

“Those guys, we still have to see what they can do and how they can pick everything up in practice and in scrimmages to see if they’re going to be better.”

Prince will compete with starter Michael Dunn at left tackle, while Gray will go against Ryan Doyle at right tackle

Best wide receiver tandems in college football

Big Ten

Maryland: Stefon Diggs and Deon Long. Weirdly, both suffered broken legs in the Terps' seventh game last season, and the passing attack -- not exactly a scintillating one anyway -- suffered without them. They are back this season, and Terps coach Randy Edsall specifically mentioned Diggs as being ready to go during Monday's Big Ten Media Day festivities. Diggs (6-0, 190), a junior, is electrifying with the ball in his hands: as a receiver, on returns and on jet sweeps. He can get deep, and he also can take a slant route and turn it into a 60-yard gain. The well-traveled Long (6-0, 185) -- he signed with West Virginia out of high school but never played a down, moved on to New Mexico, then to Iowa Western CC before ending up at Maryland -- is a solid No. 2 guy behind Diggs. Long, a senior, has good speed and can be a deep threat.

Last time a Big Ten wide receiver duo was selected in the same draft: Michigan State had two wide receivers taken in the 2012 draft -- fourth-rounderKeshawn Martin and sixth-rounder B.J. Cunningham

To answer something that was at the end of the last thread, I don't think Penn State fans (myself included) are a terrible lot.  Right now, the fan base as a whole is pretty punchy, having been the brunt of child abuse jokes now which have been directed at the fans, the team, etc.  Also, I think some of it comes from the fact that Penn State has had the run of Maryland, recruiting wise, forever, so Maryland is seen as an extension of PSU's recruiting backyard.

Like this, from yesterday:  http://espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/11286487/de-shane-simmons-no-30-espn-jr-300-commits-penn-state-nittany-lions

Frankly, what it boils down to is Maryland run defense.  I mean, Penn State is finally transitioning into something more modern post Paterno, and their are good QB's in the Big Ten, but it's probably more old school than most leagues, in that if the teams can run it down your throat 40 times a game, they tend to try and go that route.  Secondary play is not a strong suit in the Big Ten, not consistently, beyond maybe Ohio State, so Maryland's WR's could have a field day.  The question will be whether your defense (and the O-Line) can stand up to the constant pounding from all the horses in the league and get off the field consistently.  If there's one thing the Big Ten is known for, it's power football, but the league is probably a step slower in general compared to others, so guys like Diggs could have a ton of success.

It's hard not to feel like you've moved from JV to varsity ball when your conference has its own TV network, and they dedicate a day to you.

Big Ten Network Marathon: Maryland Edition

The beloved Big Ten Network has been showing the classic football, lacrosse and basketball games for each Big Ten school every day. Tomorrow, the Terps are highlighted and the glory days of football and basketball can be relived. Here is a schedule of each game being shown:

6:00-7:45 AM: 2002 National Championship-Maryland vs. Indiana-4/1/2002

Juan Dixon led the Terps on a magical run to bring home Maryland’s only basketball championship back to College Park. The game was the second lowest-scoring game in college basketball history, but Juan’s game-high 18 points paved the way to victory for Maryland.

7:45-8:00 AM: Big Ten Football Media Day: Randy Edsall

Edsall takes the podium in his first media day as a member of the Big Ten. He addresses Maryland’s expectations heading into the 2014 season.

8:00 AM-10:00 AM: 2003 Maryland vs. Florida- 12/10/2003

Gary Williams picked up his 300th career win at Maryland as the Terps upset top-ranked Florida in Gainesville 69-68. “Legendary” referee Karl Hess called the game, but luckily couldn’t prevent Maryland from victory. Just kidding, we love you Hess. Former Terp Travis Garrison hit the go-ahead bucket with 18 seconds left to give Maryland the victory.

10:00-11:00 AM: Big Ten Welcomes Maryland

I'm a hardcore Terp.  I don't have much faith in the football program though.  *shrug*  Ever since Friedgen left it's been hogwash.  We appear to have been recruiting better talent, I am just not sure Edsall is the man to develop them.  Gonna be tough sledding in the Big 10.

As for basketball - can't wait!

Watched Edsall's press conference. Not a lot of questions from the reporters. Watched the welcome special. Liked the interviews. It seems the Big 10 "experts" seem to have us in the middle of the pack. I don't think they know anything about us.

I like that Turgeon said he's been watching Big 10 teams games to get a feel for them. But we seem to play Big 10 teams regularly in basketball, but not football.

Interested to see how the Terps fair in the B1G. Football wise, I think they have their work cut out for them. They obviously aren't as good as Ohio St, Michigan, Michigan St, Wisconsin. I could see a middle of the pack finish at best. Depends really how the play against Indiana, Iowa and Rutgers. They're schedule this year does them no favors tough. Even there OOC games will be tough having to play USF, WVU and Syracuse.

As for basketball, it's pretty much those same teams to worry plus a few more like Indiana, Minnesota, Iowa and Illinois. The B1G probably has a smide more basketball depth than the ACC, though the ACC is more top heavy. Maryland shouldn't have a problem playing against the big boys since they seem to usually have 1 upset a year against UNC or Duke. But the B1G is no easy sledding there for them. I could see them finishing in the middle of the pack and maybe fighting for a tournament bid, but it'll be tough for sure.

People are clueless if they think MD won't win games in the Big 10.  Guess who has the best WR tandem in the big 10.

That's all well in good, but it takes more than good WRs to win games. Especially in the defensive minded B1G. I'm not saying MD is going winless this season in conference, but a .500 record in conference IMO, is the absolute best case scenario.

Indiana, Iowa, Rutgers, PSU and perhaps Michigan.

Beating PSU and Michigan ON THE ROAD???

I wouldn't even chalk up Rutgers as a win, because if there is anyone who can figure out how to exploit the Terps, it's Fridge.  I'd be shocked if they won 3 B1G games this year...I'm setting the bar at 2.
