Malaysian air plane shot down over Ukraine Russia border

As much as I cynically believe that Putin would do that on purpose, I also have a strong belief that the Russians are horribly incompetent when it comes to stuff like this.   A plane going down in Russia is like the Sun rising in the East.

So I don't know what to think.

Listening to New Day this morning, they interviewed someone about the sanctions from yesterday, stating they were done because there is no indication that Russia has been working to diffuse the situation on the ground.

So maybe the Russian forces didn't shoot it down, but the separatists probably did, and Russia has been doing the opposite of diffusing them. So, in the end, it's on Russia.

Good point. If it was shot down it was likely separatists, but Russia is the one arming them with surface to air missiles so it would come back to them either way.

Damn that's nuts. Wonder why they would shoot it down?

Because it was flying in a place that was closed to civilian aircraft, as per Ukrainian Aviation Administration. So, you see a big giant blip that looks and acts like a bomber in a place where no civilian aircraft are supposed to be, you assume it's a bomber. Or at least, that's what they'll claim.

The aircraft was "shot down" over Ukraine by "terrorists" operating a Buk surface-to-air missile system, according to the Facebook page of Anton Gerashchenko, adviser to the Ukrainian Interior Ministry. There were 280 passengers killed as well as 15 crew members, Gerashchenko's post reads.

"We do not exclude that the plane was shot down and confirm that the Ukraine Armed Forces did not fire at any targets in the sky," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said, according to his website.

Source? Because:

The route the Malaysian plane was on, between Kuala Lumpur and the Netherlands, is a common one, CNN aviation safety consultant Mary Schiavo said Thursday.

and because:

This is in the rare, very rare category for an airliner potentially to be shot down, at altitude, 32,000 feet, simply because of the profile of an aircraft," said Richard Quest, an aviation expert. "You can tell an aircraft, you can see a commercial aircraft. It looks like a commercial aircraft, it squawks a commercial aircraft. So something is absolutely appalling that's gone on here."

Don't know what the West does if this is pro-Russian, but not actually Russian, forces that shot down this plane.

Have to believe a flight from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur has a lot of western Europeans on it. Which will probably dictate who takes the early lead in trying to shape the response.
