zoony
This administration couldn't appear more incompetent here http://www.cnn.com/2014/06/02/us/bowe-bergdahl-questions/index.html?c=homepage-t (I thought about calling out the entire board and assigning motives as to why no thread on this but I will leave that to other big brained posters)
Larry
1) If you're looking for conspiracies about why nobody else started the thread, I'll observe that this is the first I've heard of it. 2) Now that I've read the article, I really don't see anything that I feel a need to comment on. I'm going to default to hoping that things work out.

I have heard some of the soldiers that were in combat with Bergdahl said his disappearance and capture was questionable.
zoony
Does the administration vet any of these huge decisions beforehand? Or do they enjoy stepping in hot dog ****?
WALEOVECHKIN
The story Michael Hastings did on him a few years ago is worth reading:Â http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/americas-last-prisoner-of-war-20120607 Â Has it been revealed who exactly they gave up for him? I am very interested in what happened the last two years to make this swap happen. Â
USS Redskins
6 men died searching for this deserter.... And now 5 dangerous murderers exchanged for him. What a complete disaster.
Commander PK
My first reaction to this was  what the **** is he thinking?   My latest reaction to this is still  what the **** is he thinking?  5 senior Al Qaeda for this guy?  Entirely too high a price to pay.  I'm glad for his parents that he is home, but way to steep a price.  No way this is justifiable.
Zazzaro703
Not to mention they did this to be able to pat themselves on the back and take the light of the VA story.
Destino
What's the mental state of the 5 released Taliban/AQ prisoners? Did we trade back enemies that will immediately harm us or broken shells that will fall over screaming if someone so much as slams a door? I've heard too many arguments supporting torture to think these guys simply endured the narrow routine of prison life. I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with anything, I'm just curious about the realities of this transaction. Wouldn't be surprised if a year from now a drone visits some of these released prisoners. Assassination seems to be a favored option.
Larry
I have heard some of the soldiers that were in combat with Bergdahl said his disappearance and capture was questionable. I'll assume that that's true. (Haven't seen it disputed.) However, I do wonder. Assuming that he just decided to desert one night, does that mean we should have left him there? I do see how the possibility that he may have deserted might certainly affect the price I'd be willing to pay for his behind. And that article does make it sound like the folks we released aren't just some dudes that we've been wanting to get rid of, anyway, but nobody will take them. TheGoodBits
Would it make everyone feel better to know that the Taliban dudes have gps chips implanted in their brains so we'll always know their whereabouts and can drop a drone missile on the first terrorist meeting they attend? Not that I know anything, but you have to assume we'll be keeping a real close eye on them.
bcl05
I dunno, I think the impulse to go get any and all US citizens being held there, regardless of whether or not they were even adequate as soldiers, is an admirable one. It does seem like the guys we gave up are the real deal bad actors from the Taliban. I worry that we are re-legitimizing the Taliban by giving them their leadership back. 88Comrade2000
I was wondering also, especially by someone leaning more towards the right. Bang
When the reason isn't apparent, there is the option of incompetence, or the option that we don't know, nor will we know what is actually behind the whys and what fors. Â But of course, we should know everything, no matter what. and further, if we don't we must assume it is the worst. Â Â what if this guy was supposed to be caught and supposed to infiltrate?I have no idea, but is it beyond the realm of possibility?if he's a turncoat, why give him back? nonniey
I was wondering also, especially by someone leaning more towards the right.  Just another thing to impeach Obama for, for those right wingers fuming at the mouth wanting him gone asap. For the most part we (the few that are right of center) have given up posting new threads that are critical of the administration on this board (It has become a strongly left leaning forum). Nothing we post that is critical of the administration is even believed no matter what the evidence.  Society has become too partisan on both sides (yes almost certainly me as well) so if your side does something wrong you won't recognize it probably because you're too locked on the political ramifications for whichever party you support.  Example here is an easy one that is been in the news a lot lately. There are reports that among the international community the President is widely considered to be a weak leader. Virtually all his current backers in here will deny that such a perception exists, while I absolutely believe that is the case and that the perception is accurate. LeesburgSkinFan
If we don't try this POS for desertion then just bring him home and place him under VA care. But seriously I think that after he has had some time to readjust, there SHOULD be some consequences for him for what he did. After all, men died looking for him. You can't let him walk away scot free. Plenty of soldiers have misgivings once in battle - difference is, they DON'T desert their units and go looking for the enemy to play nice with. sacase
This POS is a deserter plain and simple. I hope he is prosecuted under Artcile 85 UCMJ. Since we lost 6 soldiers as a result of his actions he needs to be given the maximum sentence under UCMJ. Â This administration looks more and more amature as time goes by. DC9
This POS is a deserter plain and simple. I hope he is prosecuted under Artcile 85 UCMJ. Since we lost 6 soldiers as a result of his actions he needs to be given the maximum sentence under UCMJ.  This administration looks more and more amature as time goes by.  So, this being a unique circumstance (and I'm staying totally out of the opining... just observing... but this being my area of expertise I feel I can lend a hand) - the maximum punishment would technically be Dishonorable Discharge, total forfeiture of all pay and allowances, and 5 years confinement.  "During a time of war" it's basically death or whatever the court martial deems fit. So, very open ended there, but I also don't think we've tied "during a time of war" to anything during the GWOT as congress never declared war here. So I can't speak to that.  I will say that this kid doesn't make it through an RCM 706 (the Military equivalent of a sanity board). So it would be very interesting.  Maybe Predicto or Tulane can translate that in civilian terms. nonniey
Wow never expected what I saw on the national news. This indeed has blown up on the President. The VA scandal was tied to bureaucrats but only indirectly to the President by the general public, but this mess is tied directly to him and it is going to have an effect. No he won't be impeached (for breaking the law) but this could actually move a few of even his base off their support for the President. Think the of the effect Katrina had on Bush.
