NFL Sunday Ticket 2014

USS Redskins

Recommended Posts

The price is increasing this year, after a decrease last year...

$240 for base package + $90 ($330) for superfan, which includes redzone channel, replays and the ability to watch on tablets. I believe it was $199 & $300 for the packages last year. Didn't take them long to raise the rates again.

Last year I paid $120 for the superfan level.

Money is tight this year (as it always seems to be) so I have to try my best to get the $120 rate again. The best way, I have found, is to call and say "Cancel Sunday Ticket." This usually gets you to a retention rep who have access to the best deals available to the level of service you subscribe to and how long you have been a customer. If you don't get the deal you can afford, then say no thanks and hang up -try again with another rep.

I plan on calling soon... I tried in March but they didn't have anything available yet but I did get $120 off my bill for 1 year and a free genie upgrade (200 HD recording hours), which is great. Our DVR's were getting filled, mostly with Disney channel crap.

Good luck - if anyone has called already - let us know how it has gone.

Also - AT&T just bought out Direct TV... wondering how that may affect any Sunday Ticket renewal negotiations since this is the last year of the deal with the NFL or any price negotiating with customers.

Updated 7/21: I called last week and was able to get the superfan package with redzone, Shortcut games and ability to watch games on ipad for $180 down from $329. I am cool with this... didn't get the $120 but maybe I will call back and see what I can do closer to start of season... good luck

I got it for free last year since I was a new DirecTV customer. I live in DC though, so I don't really "need" it, but  I want it.

I just plan on calling them, telling them that I am a Redskins fan so I don't need it, but if they can throw a sweet deal at me, I will still get it. If not, I will tell them I am leaving DirecTV altogether when my contract expires in February. The ball is in my court, and I love it lol

I usually get it at a reduced rate, really cheap for being a long time customer and getting it for the past 10 years.  My dad is a charter member (one of the first to have DTV in his area 20 years ago roughly), so he got it for free the past two years.

Last year, when I made my annual call, they actually told me they didn't have any offers for NFL Ticket directly, but since I had the premium package, I was eligible for a $40/month discount off my total bill for 6 months (whatever the rate was last year, the discount basically erased the cost of NFL Sunday Ticket).

I'm kind of pissed AT&T bought them out.  I have a feeling customer service is going to the ****ter real soon there.

never pay full price, I haven't in three years (either totally free or paid like $50).

I just call and complain about new customers getting it for free, I'm thinking about switching to Dish, blah blah blah.  usually takes 15-20 minutes or so and you have to work your way through two worker bees before getting to a "retention specialist."  DirecTV's final stand folks usually fold pretty easily, giving you the Ticket for free.

"Gimme my Redskins for free, you ****es!"

With AT&T buying them out, do you think they will care if you leave?  I dunno, I never had much success pulling the "I'm leaving" card.  I tried it one time years ago and was told thanks for being a customer since 2001 and good luck by one of the reps.

I hung up, calmed down, called back and got a different rep that helped me.  I didn't like AT&T customer service when I was forced to go to them as a cell carrier when they bought out Cingular.  Cingular was perfect, then after the merger or buy out, AT&T was ****ing horrible.  I started losing service in areas I never had before (on I-85 in Charlotte, open sky) and I remember dropping calls sometimes 4-5 times in a row in the city.  Horrible.

Edit:  I should add that after pushing them for a discount/free and complaining about new customers getting it free (like Chew just posted) and pointing out how much money I pump into their piggy bank each month with all the premium channels I get, I eventually get to a rep that works with me and gives me what I want.  The only time I threatened to leave, I was basically told, Goodbye, lol.

I've been getting st since around 06, and call to negotiate every year. My experience has been that threats to cancel later are usually no more effective than just being direct, but nice, and asking for what you want. I've threatened to cancel that day and been transferred to that dept, and had them start the process, without getting improvements on my offer

They're not idiots. They know how this game works. And they know that a threat to cancel later when your contract runs if you don't get x now is no more of a guarantee than a promise not to cancel if you do get it.

I've had the best results just being pleasant but direct, and trying to work with a cs person who wants to give me as much as I qualify for

Completely agree.  Being polite and friendly goes a long way.

Yep. Don't pretend to be pissed. Just politely explain that you aren't seeing the value and are going to be downgrading your plan (or maybe the local cable company has some special running, etc). If you let them chat with you for a bit they'll offer you cheap or free Sunday Ticket.

They main part was me not really needing the ticket. I'm pretty sure I can get what I want by letting them know that I don't need it, but if I can get it at a sweet rate, I would be willing to pay for it.

I am no longer with Dtv (as of 5-1-14), but the best deals I've ever received with them are when I actually cancelled their service. I denied every offer they threw at me. I said "cancel my service two weeks from today". A few days later you'll get an email with a "special offer". They'll give you everything under the sun not to actually cancel.

Yeah, I don't recommend going this route. It's not necessary.

As mentioned, the best approach is just to be nice and treat the person on the other end like a normal person. Direct, but nice. Works like a charm.

Edit: I will add this- if you have the basic package, as I do, then you aren't likely to get the same deals that someone with the premium package, does.

Glad someone started this thread. Two years ago I had just moved in with my now wife and she had already gotten TWC and I didn't want to make us all switch it up, so I forked out the $300 for the PS3 version which was great. We live in upstate NY so I can't get Redskins games. Basically the same thing DTV offered but through the PS3 NFL Sunday Ticket App. I loved it, but they didn't even announce its' availability until 10 days before the season started.

Then last year, we moved to a new apartment. I signed a 2 year deal with DTV and got Sunday Ticket free with the switch over. I loved it. But we moved again this year (hopefully to the last apartment before she graduates her doctoral program) ... the new apartment complex doesn't allow dishes. I know, technically its' illegal to ban them, but we JUST moved in and did not want to cause issues with our landlord right off the bat. I had to pay the $20/mo early cancellation fee with DirecTV for the 12 months I had remaining ... which basically ended up paying for the cost of Sunday Ticket I had gotten for free. Oh well, it wasn't our intention to have to do that. NOW, I do not have DirecTV and I know PS3 did not offer the service again last year. Does ANYONE know what my options will be? I know they usually are not released until September sometime. And I Know DTV offers the service to non-subscribers who do not have access to DTV services. I don't know if my dish ban in my lease will be enough for me to get that, but I literally refuse to NOT get skins games. Living out of the DC market for two years now, I've still managed to be able to watch every game (hell, I even Watched Skins/Rams from the ER two years ago on my iphone thanks to Sunday Ticket mobile).

EDIT* I will also say that Sunday Ticket/Redzone Channel absolutely did wonders for my overall NFL fandom. I've always played fantasy and loved it, but these past two years have been unreal. Sunday is no longer about JUST the Skins game. It's about the Skins game and them 4-5 hours of Redzone/fantasy player stalking. It's amazing. I'd happily pay the $300 for it if I still had DTV (or bargain it down, either way, I'd get it again and again).

So true.  I love sitting there with my laptop open watching the fantasy scores update live and switching back and forth to games when my players are on offense.  What a rush!  Can't do any of that without the Ticket

Am I the only one that uses the Player Tracker feature on channel 701? **** will change your life.

I tried to last year but I got sick of having to enter new lineups each week and with a few serious leagues I found it easier to just use stat tracker on the comp. along with redzone channel.

To each their own. Only takes a few minutes.

Not going to lie, I nearly get a stiffie when I see it flash up on the screen that one of my players has scored on a long TD pass or run.

I never watched much Red Zone until last year... omg, its awesome. I only had the standard package but last year wanted the superfan with the tablet games and redzone came with it... really enjoyed that when the skins weren't on.

I pretty much will go wherever the NFL Ticket goes. I am guessing that DTV will still have the Ticket but give up its exclusivity rights and allow other providers to sell. From what I understand, they don't make anything off the Ticket but use it to get more subscribers.

Sometimes it is necessary. DTV does have a limit as to how much/how often they negotiate with a specific customer. I always spoke to the CS reps like adults. But I never got anywhere near as much from them as when I set a cancellation date.

I have the premium package and always get a good deal but sometimes it depends on the rep. A few years back I had to call back twice to get the good deal. I never threaten and always just keep cool.. It is frustrating to see new customers get it free after I have been a customer for over 12 years, though.

I heard the next deal for Sunday Ticket might be astronomical, and DirecTV won't be able to afford it, since they use it purely to gain new customers and it doesn't make them money other than to attract subscribers. That said, losing it would be painful for them, or anyone, for that matter. They've had its rights since inception.
