CaliSkinsFan92
good article on RG3's improvements this offseason http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/redskins/2014/04/11/qb-tutor-rg3-looks-100-percent-healthy/7613487/ 5]Quarterback guru Terry Shea, who tutored Griffin prior to the 2012 scouting combine and during the run-up to the draft, spent six days recalibrating RG3's footwork and release point the last week of March in Arizona. 5]It isn't coincidence that without his bothersome knee brace, Griffin again looks the gifted player who took the league by 2012 offensive rookie of the year storm. 5]"He looked 100% healthy," Shea told USA TODAY Sports Friday. "I didn't let up on him and, boy, he kept coming — and he reminded me of the old Robert Griffin that I knew coming out of Baylor for those eight-10 weeks we worked together in 2012. 5]"He could have very easily lost it given the year he had. I put him through a gantlet of drills. And Robert made all the throws, showing great skills. It sure appeared to me that he took that next step as a pocket passer." Shea, who previously served as head coach at San Jose State and Rutgers as well as an offensive assistant with four different NFL teams, was surprised that Shanahan and his son, Kyle, the former Redskins offensive coordinator, had let RG3's mechanics lapse. "For some reason, they just dropped the ball on his footwork fundamentals,'' Shea said. "I'm convinced. You get so caught up on schemes and decisions and progressions and they forget that a quarterback needs just as much attention on his footwork and fundamentals as well.'' So the Bill Walsh disciple fixed what was broken.
Ghost of
How RG3 Got His Groove Back I really think he not only returns to 2012 form, but surpasses it with his passing performance. It's not, to me, about the yards as much (though I think we will want him to be around 3800+ to be effective as an offense) but about the precision, those "clutch" plays and drives he'd lead when we most desperately needed them and his ability to make a defense lose heart. I don't really see why this team can't compete for NFC east crown, and maybe more. I think RG3 will have to do more than Russell Wilson did vs. SF or Denver to go beyond getting a playoff spot but he's shown that he's a better player at his best and can carry a team in a way few others can. AlldaySkins
Exactly what we want to hear, but let's wait and see what happens. I like hearing that his pocket passing is improving though.
Ghost of
I'll believe it when I see it. Why the skepticism in this particular case, though? This is the guy who worked on RG3's mechanics and footwork which were great in 2012. And the flaws last year are things we all pointed out from our vantage points on our couches/beds. If he's seeing these flaws corrected, why not take it at face value since the knowledgeable among us diagnosed it, at least by mid-season, and the guy who helped him become #2 pick tutored him again and says he's good. Thekyle1591
Because you hear stuff like this ALL the time this time of year. Remember when RG3 was superhuman and going to be ready for week 1?

You're right. All in for Week 1. I still remember saying to everybody that Cousins should've been playing to our bye week then see what happens. Although the biggest mistake in all of that was not letting RG3 play in preseason. That falls on the old lobster.

Agree. RG3 is a much better QB, but he has to do more to win games. How many games did Seattle win because of Russel Wilson last year. Seahawks rode to Super Bowl mostly with their defense and running games. RG3 need to carry the team, he got a much tougher job. The team's running game probably is OK, but the defense is questionable.
posse87
Similar article.....Maybe they should Pony up and hire Terry Shea as the personal QB mechanics coach....j/k, but not really! http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000341004/article/the-old-rgiii-was-at-march-workouts-qb-guru-says
moondog
Because you hear stuff like this ALL the time this time of year. Remember when RG3 was superhuman and going to be ready for week 1? And because he spent all of 6 days with him. Obviously Robert has been working on it this offseason if he looked better but footwork is such a huge part of the game that guys like Peyton still spend their entire offseasons working on it. Again, I'll take a wait and see approach. Anybody can look good in shorts in Arizona. Robert looked very skiddish last year, overly willing to scramble out of the pocket and had poor mechanics. Sometimes that mental aspect is the hardest part to fix when you have large men coming after you. I'll believe Robert has become a better pocket passer, both mentally and with his footwork, when I see it.
Burgold
It makes sense that he looks better. All reports are positive so far. This guy needs to keep his rep. Therefore, while he shouldn't bad mouth his clients he also can't be wrong too often or he'll lose business. Besides I believe him when he says Griffin's mechanics got sloppy. He was wo question a different QB in 2012 than 13. I think physical, technique, and psychological all played a role. Add to that toxic environment, bad play calling , and poor line play and you have a disaster in the making.

santanathegreat
RG3 was cleared for week 1 last year, but he didn't play the preseason, he had to play with the clunky brace, and he didn't have full confidence in the knee, which caused bad throws off his back leg. I think this article is very good news because the planting issue was the biggest one with him last season.

AlvinWaltonIsMyBoy
Guys, if we waited until we saw stuff to form opinions, ES would have more tumbleweeds blowin' through it than a Sergio Leone movie. I like the taste of koolaid. It is quite possible to get your expectations up and then not feel let down when the results fall short of those expectations. I personally think Griff is gonna rip people this year. Bring it.
Ghost of
Were you in a coma since the Seattle playoff game? I have a good feeling about RG3 this year, but I do have the "see it to believe it" sentiment. But that's the point. That's quite literally the point of this post and Shea's observations. Basically, ONE of the primary reasons RG3 didn't perform up to expectations (beyond coaching, interior offensive line, etc.) was his mechanics in the aftermath of the injury and return to the field. The guy is saying thsoe things which led to success in 2012 have returned. It would be one thing if we were talking about some other context, but your objection is actually a confirmation of what Shea and the Optimates (forgive the classical reference, optimists if you wish) are saying. Since RG3 recovered in college and even improved after college in the offseason before 2012, the weight of the evidence is actually, as far as mechanics go, on the side of people who are hopeful rather. We're not talking a guy who had a great single year in college and hasn't delivered yet in the pros as far as accuracy, precision, etc. Does this guarantee we'll be in the Bowl this year? No. But I think a reasonable person is less "show me" and more "sounds good, let's put it together in the context of the team, interior offensive line blocking, recognition on the field, etc."
