Game of Thrones TV Show: Season 4 (merged)---NO BOOK CONTENT OR SPOILERS ALLOWED!

I think it needs to become forum etiquette that in the event there is a movie/tv series based on printed source material that there's NO talk of the print version in the tv threads. It's perfectly simple to create a book/comic/scroll/stone tablet version thread of the story.

I'm figuring "no spoilers" for it, given the books that have a lot of potential for such, and those are such distracting (or worse) conversations for people who are watching the show but haven't read the books (a majority, usually, in these cases).

So I'm thinking start a separate thread again if you want to discuss book storyline v. the tv show that with like-minded folk (like with WD).

The "no spoilers" approach seems to be the trend across our social landscape in general, and here in particular---note the WD spoiler thread, after all the whining :D :evilg: :pfft: about being able to talk that differences or "what if" comic v. tv stuff, it has been a dead <pun! :ols:> thread anyway compared to the TV thread.

Chime in here if ya want with your opinion, while we wait for the new season, but I'm thinking "no spoilers is actually going to be the forum norm given what I've seen and just what makes sense to most people. :)

Hmm...as the thread starter and book reader shouldn't I get to make the call on that one? Bunch of thread hijacking jackals!

Yes, that's Mance Rayder.

Well, mi amigo, in case you're serious, just figure your authority over the thread is officially usurped in this regard. :) This has always been the case (mod/OP wise) with ES, but it rarely comes up. :)

Your thread begins it's life with the title about the TV series, and we'll keep it that way since the other thread for the book exists.

I don't think we need any sticky thread in here to make what most folks know and seem to want, and has already in place for while, "official"---that this will be the forum standard.

TV threads will be for the TV show only, with no spoilers or potential spoilers. Separate threads can be stated for people who want to talk the books and the differences between the media. Of course this follows the logical cultural norm where spoilers in any matter are generally not appreciated. This way everyone's offered their choice.

I think that what you propose (and is supported by others), should be ES Law. :)

The militarism in these threads by people don't read yet scream with the mere mention of the hint of the written word is amazing. I got called out in another thread on this topic for discussing what occurred in the TV show by someone who thought I might be discussing what occurred in the books.

I think the anti book, reading folks should just get over it. The movie is a little different than the book, one isn't the same as the other.. if you don't want to hear what might occur in the show ( which nobody knows for sure).. don't read a thread about the show which has the title of the book in it..

Who knows how far you booktalkers will go? As evidenced in the walking dead thread, some posters really have a vague concept of what spoiler is/can be.

Elessar, George RR Martin has written 5 books out of a proposed 7, if you had read them you would know that he really has just set the stage with those books. It's not even clear that Martin himself has any idea with how he's going to end any of these threads yet.

BTW... Song of Ice and Fire is the title for all three seasons of the show. That's the name of the seven book arch, of which only 5 have been written. Game of Thrones was the title of the first book, not the seven book arch.

Thanks. I've finished up to book 5. I don't understand the point of your post.

Then why are you calling people out for mentioning the existence of the books?

If you have finished up through book 5 then you know what happens with Sansa, Arya, Bran, Jon Snow, Tyrion, Sam, and Daenerys right?...

No you don't. You don't know if they are alive, dead, if any are going to succeed, fail, have already failed, are about to fail in their allotted goals....

You don't know anything about them really except what has already been covered in the TV shows... You know generally what their characters are pursuing.. Really no more.

That's it after 5 books. You know generally what their characters goals are, same thing you know from the books.

You actually knew more about them before you started reading these bloody tomes having only watched the TV show. It's like when you study for a final exam. Before you

start studying there is a confidence that you know everything because you lack even the information to know how much you don't know.

After reading all five books you are just beginning to understand everything you don't know about the characters.

It's seems to me George RR Martin's art, what he excels at is the spinning of the story. He has not demonstrated any ability finalize anything yet. Thus is in these series more than any other series or collection of stories...

there really are no spoilers. Not yet. Hell in the book if you had read 3 or 4 books you might actually think you know more than you do and falsely spil a story line only to be found you were in error after further reading.

Martin keeps everybody guessing.. At least he has so far.

Yes there are spoilers and all I said was, in accordance with forum rules, that we don't discuss the books in the show thread.

For people who haven't read the books, certain comments (No, Steve did not make any) are clues in it of itself. Just you talking about what is and what isn't wrapped up is a spoiler in it of itself—because it gives clues to the nature of the show. Just let the show unravel for people the way it would normally, as if they were in the dark.

What you think doesn't matter in this. What matters is the moderator directives (and they're all that truly matters beyond expressing opinions), which it appears you may have missed. It's simple. You drop anything a moderator considers a spoiler, you get time off. :) The risk of "what's a spolier durrr" is totally on the poster. :)

It;s been pointed out there's a thread to talk about the books. If anyone is so anal that they NEED to talk about the books in the TV show thread, that's fine. Really. (at this point).

Make an "error" however, and you'll be off the forum with the length of time depending on the circumstance (which will include user note history).

You want to talk "militarism", consider yourself blitzkrieged. For your "anti book reading folks need to get over it" overview, and for you just being the endlessly augmentative "you" we all know and love (and we do---you are a great part of the forum IMO, warts and all) YOU specifically, are NOT to mention the books in this thread again. :)

To repeat---there is no edict (other than for JMS currently) to not mention books---that's (at this point) a dialog between posters they can argue about (until it becomes a real thread distraction). But at any point anything that even smells like a spoiler, the penalties will be stiff after all these warnings. There can always be a book thread on anything. No good reason for anyone to feel slighted.

I will absolutely defer to your unbiased and as always impartial ruling. Without an argument.
