Pick6

Recommended Posts

This will be the thread to discuss the books and show together for all the folks who have read the books. That way we can move out of the show thread and not give away spoilers to those just watching the show.

A Game of Thrones

A Clash of Kings

A Storm of Swords

A Feast for Crows

A Dance with Dragons

The Winds of Winter

A Dream of Spring

Just to be clear, we can discuss the show and books with spoilers up to and including dance with dragons without having to black out the text? I've just refrained from talking about the show and books at all, my friends haven't read the books and I have a terrible poker face.

I think we are good. If not I am sure a mod will come in and correct us.

By the way, was anyone else dissappointed with the Stannis' fire sword in the show? To me it read a lot different in the book.

This was a good idea. And SS - George has said he has about 200 pages done on Winds and he can usually knock out 400-500 pages per year. Manuscript ends up being around 1500+ so we're probably looking at 3 years or so. :(

Yea, I was expecting the sword to be completely engulfed in flames and glowing, so much show that you couldn't see the blade. Instead it just looked like the blade had been dipped in oil before being set on fire. I don't know, after seeing how well they enlarged the Direwolves and how awesome the dragons looked, I expected more.

What I wanted to see was the blade actually glowing.

Alright...love a thread where we can talk openly about the books.

Anyone have thoughts on who are really Jon Snows parents? I like the theory that i have heard that he is not really Ned's son. Some theories are that Jon's mother was really Ned's sister, Lyanna, and that his father was Prince Rhaegar Targayen. The thought is that is why Lyanna and Rhaegar disappeared off to the tower of joy. We know that Ned made some promise to his sister as she was dying in a pool of blood... could that promise to be to take care of her son and to never tell anyone that he is a Targayen. It would explain why Ned was always telling Jon he was a Stark (through Lyanna) and also why he was so against the idea of killing all the Targayens every time Robert brought it up. Only kink in this is that Jon looks like Stark and doesnt have the hair & eyes that all the Targs do, but if Jon was 1/2 Stark, who knows.

It is also worth wondering if perhaps Lyanna is Jon's mother and Robert is the father, we know how Robert felt about Lyanna.

Lyanna is a Tully though, just like her sister.

Lyanna is a stark, she is Ned's sister, the one Robert was in love with. One of the reasons Robert went to war really.

You're thinking of Lysa Arryn. She's Catelyn's sister. The crazy one breastfeeding her son

Ah yea, mixed that up.

That's not to say that Lyanna couldn't be the mother though, there's a lot of theories floating around. I could easily see Ned lying about his parentage when he mentioned in the first season that Jon's mothers name was Wylla or something like that.

Haha no worries, a lot of characters with similar names to keep track of.

The Rhaegar + Lyanna = Jon is a popular theory on his parentage. A lot of people agree that Ned had too much honor to sleep around and that "the promise" he made to his sister while she died in his arms might have been to raise her son as his own. The book is called a Song of Ice and Fire (Starks are Ice, Targaryens are fire).

Rhaegar became obsessed with prophecies and I think at some point he says that the dragon must have 3 heads, he only had 2 kids.

The biggest disappointment for me was leaving out the Prologue. I really wanted to see

Patchface

Another interesting theory I've seen kicked around is that

Aegon is the 3rd head of the dragon:

Ice = Jon Snow
Fire = Dany
Ice + Fire = Aegon

Of course, it's also just as likely that he is a Blackfyre and is the Mummer's Dragon. This would also support my theory that Varys is actually of Blackfyre lineage

I think Jon Snow is from Rhaegar and Lyanna. He is also azhor ahai. If you read the stabbing scene the smoke rising from his wounds just like a dragon and the salty tears reads like the prophecy. He def isn't dead either i think the prologue from Dance set the stage for Jon warging into something to avoid dying. This would also release him from his vows of the night watch because technically he would have died ending his watch. Jon then goes on and becomes one Dany's 3 headed dragon. Well that's how i see it going into Winds.

*Edit* I've also seen an interesting theory that Jaime and Cersei aren't Lannisters either. I haven't been sold on that one yet though.

My co-worker and myself were also talking about being disappointed by the "lightbringer" scene.

I'm not. It's a fake lightbringer, therefore is really just a sword on fire IMO, not a fiery sword.

Edit: Happened to have the book open, and yes, it glowed with a fiery light, not actually on fire. I still think it's fine, I don't want to be too impressed with the fake lightbringer.
